Primary scientific literature can be difficult to navigate for anyone unfamiliar with its foreign, formal structure. We sought to create a fun, easy learning tool to help familiarize students of all ages with the structure of a scientific article. Our main learning objective was for the student to realize that science writing is formulaic-that specific information is found in predictable locations within an article-and that, with an understanding of the formula, anyone can comfortably navigate any journal article and accurately predict what to expect to find in each section. To this end, we designed a Journal Article Scavenger Hunt that requires the user to find and identify a series of commonplace features of a primary research article. The scavenger hunt activity is quick and easy to implement, and is adaptable to various ages and settings, including the classroom, lab, and at outreach events. The questions in the scavenger hunt can be scaled in difficulty and specificity to suit the instructor's needs. Over many years of using this activity, we have received positive feedback from students of all ages, from elementary school students to lay adult-learners as well as science teachers themselves. By making the unknown seem predictable and approachable, the scavenger hunt helps a variety of audiences feel more comfortable with science and more confident in their ability to engage directly with the scientific literature. Seasons of death: patterns of predation on wild lemurs and other fauna by endemic and introduced predators.

Folia Primatol (Basel)

Bat Conservation International, 500N Capital of TX Hwy, Bldg 8, Suite 225, Austin, TX 78746, USA.

Introduced species can negatively impact endemic flora and fauna. Studies have primarily utilized camera trap observations and occupancy modelling to better clarify the presence/absence and temporal overlap of endemic and exotic predators. Longitudinal data from field research sites are important as they can provide a finer understanding of predator dynamics and their effects on endemic species.

Escape Room with a Twist: Designing an Interprofessional, Active Learning Experience with a Focus on Specific Healthcare Professions.

J Allied Health

Dep. of Physical Therapy, University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, 1125 N. College Avenue, Fayetteville, AR 72703, USA. Tel 479-713-8600.

Engagement of all students in an interprofessional learning activity is crucial to the overall success of the event. Due to limited diversity of healthcare disciplines, academic programs on regional medical campuses face particular challenges to create events where all students can have an active role in learning experiences. To meet the interprofessional education needs of all healthcare disciplines on a regional medical campus, a learning event was designed to purposefully involve each group of students to solve an escape room/scavenger hunt experience.

Resource partitioning is central to the incredible productivity of microbial communities, including gigatons in annual methane emissions through syntrophic interactions. Previous work revealed how a sulfate reducer (Desulfovibrio vulgaris, Dv) and a methanogen (Methanococcus maripaludis, Mm) underwent evolutionary diversification in a planktonic context, improving stability, cooperativity, and productivity within 300-1000 generations. Here, we show that mutations in just 15 Dv and 7 Mm genes within a minimal assemblage of this evolved community gave rise to co-existing ecotypes that were spatially enriched within a few days of culturing in a fluidized bed reactor.

In Africa, humans and large carnivores compete over access to resources, including prey. Disturbance by humans to kills made by carnivores, often for purposes of obtaining all or portions of the carcass, constitutes a form of human-wildlife conflict. However the occurrence of this practice, known as human kleptoparasitism, and its impact on carnivores has received little scientific attention.
