Published: April 2016

Background: Evidences supporting the use of ICP monitoring after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) are limited. The aim of our paper is to examine whether elevated intracranial pressure (ICP) and ICP-derived variables predict mortality and functional outcomes after aSAH.

Methods: A systematic review of the literature was performed through PubMed and Cochrane databases up to June 2015. Population was restricted to aSAH patients requiring admission to the intensive care unit. ICP was included in the analysis as absolute value as well as variables derived from ICP monitoring (pressure reactivity index, ICP pulse wave amplitude, ICP-arterial blood pressure wave amplitude correlation and ICP variability). Outcomes included mortality, neurological recovery and delayed cerebral ischemia (DCI). Quality of evidence was rated using the GRADE system.

Results: Twenty-six studies were examined. Due to heterogeneity in qualifying studies, a meta-analysis could not be generated. We found a correlation between elevated ICP and mortality. However, ICP absolute values were not independent predictors of long-term functional outcomes (low quality of evidence). A variable relationship between elevated ICP and DCI was found (very low quality of evidence). ICP-derived variables had higher accuracy than ICP absolute values in predicting functional outcomes (moderate quality of evidence).

Conclusions: Elevated ICP was associated with higher mortality however absolute ICP values per se were not independent predictors of functional recovery. Variables derived from ICP monitoring are more accurate than ICP absolute values in predicting outcome. Given the absence of good quality data, additional large studies may help to better define the prognostic value of ICP after aSAH.

New Numerical Inversion Method to Improve the Spatial Accuracy of Elemental Imaging for LA-ICP-MS.

The elemental imaging of laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) provides spatial information on elements and therefore can further investigate the growth or evolution processes of an analyte. However, the accurate determination of spatial information is limited by the decoupling between the elemental distribution and mass spectrometry signals. This phenomenon, which is more distinct when high-diffusion ablation cells are used, arises from the overlap of ablation and the transport dispersion of aerosols.

Nanoparticles (NPs) exhibit high reactivity and mobility in the environment, and a significant capacity to penetrate living organisms, potentially leading to harmful effects. Volcanoes are the second major source of natural NPs emitted into the atmosphere, with an estimated flux of 342 Tg/year. Few studies have focused on their fate.

Analysis of changes in platelet parameters and inflammatory markers in intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy before disease development.

Department of Reproductive Medicine Center, Changzhou Maternal and Child Health Care Hospital, Changzhou Medical Center, Nanjing Medical University Changzhou 213000, Jiangsu, China.

Background: Intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP) is the most common liver condition during pregnancy, associated with adverse outcomes for both mother and fetus. While inflammatory markers are important predictors in oncology and cardiovascular disease, their role in ICP remains unclear. This study investigates changes in platelet parameters and blood-derived inflammatory markers around the onset of ICP and evaluates their potential as independent risk factors.

Lipases have catalytic capacity in various processes such as hydrolysis. Those derived from plant sources, such as linseed, offer an economical alternative. The immobilization process facilitates the recovery and reuse of lipase, providing advantages such as resistance to high temperatures and difficulties in recovering and reusing free lipases, which makes product separation difficult.
