In summer 2011, two new laser strainmeters about 26.6 m long were installed in N-S and E-W directions parallel to an existing quartz tube strainmeter system at the Geodynamic Observatory Moxa, Thuringia/Germany. This kind of installation is unique in the world and allows the direct comparison of measurements of horizontal length changes with different types of strainmeters for the first time. For the comparison of both data sets, we used the tidal analysis over three years, the strain signals resulting from drilling a shallow 100 m deep borehole on the ground of the observatory and long-period signals. The tidal strain amplitude factors of the laser strainmeters are found to be much closer to theoretical values (85%-105% N-S and 56%-92% E-W) than those of the quartz tube strainmeters. A first data analysis shows that the new laser strainmeters are more sensitive in the short-periodic range with an improved signal-to-noise ratio and distinctly more stable during long-term drifts of environmental parameters such as air pressure or groundwater level. We compared the signal amplitudes of both strainmeter systems at variable signal periods and found frequency-dependent amplitude differences. Confirmed by the tidal parameters, we have now a stable and high resolution laser strainmeter system that serves as calibration reference for quartz tube strainmeters.

Respiratory interventions including noninvasive ventilation, continuous positive airway pressure and high-flow nasal oxygen generated infectious aerosols may increase risk of airborne disease (SARS-CoV-2, influenza virus) transmission to healthcare workers. We developed and tested a prototype portable UV-C device to sterilize high flows of viral-contaminated air from a simulated patient source at airflow rates of up to 100 l/m. Our device consisted of a central quartz tube surrounded 6 high-output UV-C lamps, within a larger cylinder allowing recirculation past the UV-C lamps a second time before exiting the device.

Titanium dioxide thin films on the inner wall of quartz tubes were prepared in situ by the sol-gel method. Meanwhile, copper and cerium were loaded onto the surface of the titanium dioxide thin films to enhance photocatalytic activity and broaden the range of light absorption. X-ray diffractometer, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectrum, N gas adsorption, UV diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, electron paramagnetic resonance, photoluminescene spectroscopy, and so on were used to characterize the structure, morphology, chemical composition, and optical properties of the prepared photocatalyst.

In the present study, the recycling process of bottom zinc dross was performed by evaporation and subsequent condensation at 800 °C for 30 min with an observed argon flow rate of 100-400 mL/min to ensure an inert atmosphere, to observe the evaporation rate and final form of the product. Under the set conditions of over 98% zinc purity, products in the form of nanofibres (thickness 500 nm), powder (size of spherical particles 2-5 μm), dendrites, and metallic forms were obtained. The employed mathematical modelling (via Ansys 2023R1 software) predicted the behaviour of the argon flow current in the quartz tube, as well as the temperature gradient in the quartz tube and in the close vicinity of the zinc sample.

It is still critical to prepare a high-quality absorber layer for high-performance Cu2ZnSnSe4 (CZTSe) multi-component thin film solar cell. The gas pressure during the selenization process is commonly referred to as the pressure of inert gas in the tube furnace, while the exact selenium partial pressure is difficult to be controlled. Therefore, the grain growth under different selenium partial pressures cannot be made clear, and the film quality cannot be controlled as well.
