A retrotransposon of the Mag family was found in the Drosophila simulans genome for the first time. We also identified novel transposable elements representing the Mag family in seven Drosophila species. The high similarity between the 3' and 5' long terminal repeats in the found copies of transposable elements indicates that their retrotransposition has occurred relatively recently. Thus, the Mag family of retrotransposons is quite common for the genus Drosophila.

Arachis hypogaea monoacylglycerol lipase AhMAGL3b participates in lipid metabolism.

BMC Plant Biol

December 2024

College of Advanced Agricultural Sciences, Zhejiang A & F University, Hangzhou, 311300, China.

Background: Monoacylglycerol lipase (MAGL) belongs to the serine hydrolase family; it catalyzes MAG to produce glycerol and free fatty acids (FFAs), which is the final step in triacylglycerol (TAG) hydrolysis. The effects of MAGL on comprehensive lipid metabolism and plant growth and development have not been elucidated, especially in Arachis hypogaea, an important oil crop.

Results: Herein, AhMAGL3b encoding a protein with both hydrolase and acyltransferase regions, a member of MAGL gene family, was cloned and overexpressed in Arabidopsis thaliana.

Background: The diversity-generating retroelements (DGRs) are a family of genetic elements that can produce mutations in target genes often related to ligand-binding functions, which possess a C-type lectin (CLec) domain that tolerates massive variations. They were first identified in viruses, then in bacteria and archaea from human-associated and environmental genomes. This DGR mechanism represents a fast adaptation of organisms to ever- changing environments.

Four novel halophilic archaeal strains CGA53, CG83, FCH27, and SEDH24 were isolated from a soda lake and two saline lakes in China, respectively. Strain CGA53 showed the highest 16S rRNA gene similarity (92.6%) to Salinilacihabitans rarus AD-4, and the other three strains were found to be related to Halalkalicoccus species with similarities of 97.

Diagnosing hereditary spastic paraplegia (HSP) in paediatric patients can be challenging, especially when there is no positive family history. Children are often initially misdiagnosed with cerebral palsy due to the gradual progression of the disease and non-specific neuroimaging findings, despite the absence of perinatal insult. This misdiagnosis can prevent timely prenatal diagnosis, limiting the ability to make informed decisions about the pregnancy and to plan early interventions.

Microbial biotransformation of trace organic chemicals (TOrCs) is an essential process in wastewater treatment to eliminate environmental pollution. Understanding TOrC biotransformation mechanisms, especially at their original concentrations, is important to optimize treatment performance, whereas our current knowledge is limited. Here, we investigated the biotransformation of seven TOrCs by 24 model communities.
