Polyelectrolyte hydrogels are smart materials whose swelling behavior is governed by ionizable groups on their polymeric chains, making them sensitive to pH and ionic strength. This study combined experiments and modeling to characterize anionic hydrogels. Mechanical tests and gravimetric analyses were performed to track hydrogel mass over time and at a steady state under varying pH and salt concentrations.

Background: Recent studies provide strong evidence for a key role of skeletal muscle pathophysiology in myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS). In a 2021 review article on the pathophysiology of ME/CFS, we postulated that hypoperfusion and ischemia can result in excessive sodium and calcium overload in skeletal muscles of ME/CFS patients to cause mitochondrial damage. Since then, experimental evidence has been provided that supports this concept.

Beta-AlO-based solid-state sodium metal batteries are some of the best options for large-scale energy storage systems because of their high energy density, high-level safety, and low cost. Nevertheless, their room-/low-temperature operation remains challenging due to low ionic conductivity of Beta-AlO electrolyte and weak solid-solid contact of the Na/Beta-AlO interface. Herein, an integrated strategy was developed via electrolyte optimization and interface regulation, in which Cu as a stabilizing agent was incorporated into Beta-AlO to improve density and ionic conductivity and the InS interface layer was introduced between the Na anode and solid electrolyte to induce the in situ formation of a mixed conductive layer (Na-In alloy and NaS).

Moisture-electric generators (MEGs), which convert moisture chemical potential energy into electrical power, are attracting increasing attention as clean energy harvesting and conversion technologies. However, existing devices suffer from inadequate moisture trapping, intermittent electric output, suboptimal performance at low relative humidity (RH), and limited ion separation efficiency. This study designs an ionic hydrogel MEG capable of continuously generating energy with enhanced selective ion transport and sustained ion-to-electron current conversion at low RH by integrating an ion-exchange membrane (IEM-MEG).

ConspectusOrganic mixed ionic electronic conductors (OMIECs) represent an exciting and emerging class of materials that have recently revitalized the field of organic semiconductors. OMIECs are particularly attractive because they allow both ionic and electronic transport while retaining the inherent benefits of organic semiconducting materials such as mechanical conformability and biocompatibility. These combined properties make the OMIECs ideal for applications in bioelectronics, energy storage, neuromorphic computing, and electrochemical transistors for sensing.
