The number of patient imaging studies has increased because of precautious physicians ordering scans when a vague symptom is presented; subsequently, the number of incidental meningiomas detected has increased as well. These brain tumors do not present with related symptoms and are usually small. MRI and computed tomographic scans most frequently capture incidental meningiomas. Incidental meningiomas are managed with observation, radiation, and surgical resection. Ultimately, a conservative approach is recommended, such as observing an incidental meningioma and then only radiating if the tumor displays growth, whereas a surgical approach is to be used only when proven necessary.

Radiation has been used to treat meningiomas since the mid-1970s. Traditionally, radiation was reserved for patients unfit for major surgery or those with surgically inaccessible tumors. With an increased quantity and quality of imaging, and an aging population, there has been a rise in incidentally diagnosed meningiomas with smaller tumors at diagnosis time.

This case presents an unusual combination between an intraventricular meningioma and a choroid plexus papilloma. Intraventricular meningiomas are rare intraventricular tumors presenting with symptoms of hydrocephalus, headache, and neurological deficits. The rarity of choroid plexus papillomas is highlighted in medical diagnostics, with the majority of these findings being incidental within the setting of obstructive hydrocephalus.

Venous vascular malformations of the parotid gland are very rare vascular tumors, especially among adults. This case report discusses the presentation and challenges of diagnosing a venous vascular malformation of the parotid gland in a patient with previous oncologic history. Our patient is a 45-year-old female with a history of breast cancer, meningioma, and secreting pituitary adenoma who presented with a malformation on magnetic resonance imaging, incidentally demonstrating a T2 intense mass in the superficial lobe of the right parotid gland.

Convexity dural hemangioma: illustrative case.

J Neurosurg Case Lessons

November 2024

Department of Neurosurgery, Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center, New Orleans, Louisiana.

Background: Dural hemangiomas are a relatively rare form of intracranial mass, as hemangiomas tend to present in bone or as intraparenchymal lesions and only around 5%-13% have been reported to originate from the dura mater. Here, the authors present the case of a 46-year-old female who underwent craniotomy for a suspected convexity meningioma resection, which was unexpectedly found to be a dural capillary hemangioma.

Observations: The patient was a 46-year-old female who presented with a left frontal intracranial mass found incidentally and showed significant growth over 4 years.

Background: Asymptomatic patients with meningiomas are increasingly detected, where management can be challenging in terms of surgery versus watchful waiting. Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is an important factor in clinical decision-making, albeit not greatly studied in this patient group. The aim of this paper is to map the HRQoL among patients with surgically removed asymptomatic meningioma as compared to the general population.
