Conventional water wet-bonding technique has been advocated by many scientists, but the excess water will induce suboptimal polymerization of dental adhesives, phase separation, and nanoleakage, which will influence the longevity of resin-dentin interfaces. Recent studies have put forward a new concept, ethanol wet-bonding. This technique can increase in dentin bond durability. This review focuses on the principles of ethanol wet-bonding, its surface treatment methods.

Objectives: To examine whether the effectiveness of current dentin-priming approaches requiring solvated hydrophilic resins may be replicated by modifying the infiltration dynamics of neat methacrylate-based monomers into dry-etched dentin using dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) pretreatments.
Methods: HPO-etched mid-coronal dentin surfaces from human molars were air-dried for 30 s and randomly pretreated with 50 %(v/v) ethanolic DMSO for 20 or 60 s. Untreated samples and an isolated wet-bonding group served as controls.

This preregistered ex vivo investigation examined the dentinal hybrid layer formation of a resinous infiltrant (Icon), with reference to both thickness (HLT) and homogeneity when combined with modified tunnel preparation (occlusal cavity only) and internal/external caries infiltration. The adhesives Syntac and Scotchbond MP were used as controls (Groups 1 and 3) or in combination with Icon (Groups 2 and 4). A split-tooth design using healthy third molars from 20 donors resulted in 20 prepared dentine cavities per experimental group.

(1) : The objective of this in vitro study was to evaluate the impact of different etching times and ethanol pre-treatments on the immediate bond strength of a hydrophilic multi-mode universal adhesive (Clearfil Universal Bond Quick, Kuraray, UBQ) and on the consequent gelatinolytic activity of metalloproteinases (MMPs) on radicular dentin. (2) : Sixty single-root teeth were selected and divided into four groups according to the adhesive protocol applied for fiber post cementation: (G1) 15 s HPO application + UBQ; (G2) 30 s HPO application + UBQ; (G3) 15 s HPO application + ethanol pre-treatment + UBQ; (G4) 30 s HPO + ethanol pre-treatment + UBQ. After adhesive procedures, fiber posts were luted into the post space with a dual-curing cement (DC Core, Kuraray) and light-cured for 40 s.
