Hemophagocytic histiocytosis diagnosed by fine needle aspiration cytology of the spleen. A case report.

Acta Cytol

June 2004

Dipartimento di Anatomia Patologica, Facoltà di Medicina e Chirurgia, Università-di Napoli Federico II, Via Pansini n. 5, 80131 Naples, Italy.

Background: Hemophagocytic histiocytosis (HPS) is an idiopathic, familial or secondary syndrome characterized by mature histiocytes causing intensive erythrophagocytosis.

Case: A 2-month-old male suffering from autoimmune hemolytic anemia, fever, jaundice and hepatosplenomegalia underwent fine needle aspiration cytology of the spleen. Aspiration was performed using a 23-gauge, short needle with a subcostal approach.

The case of 52-year-old man is presented, who had suffered from pains in his right brachial region and in whom, upon admission to the Lower Silesia Centre of Oncology, a tumour of 20 cm in diameter and restricted mobility was disclosed in the right brachial region and proximal 1/3 of his right arm. Radiograms of his right humerus disclosed non-uniform restructuring of the osseous tissue, dominated by osteosclerosis in the upper half of his right humerus, while in the surrounding dift tissues of the proximal portion non-uniform shades were seen of calcified appearance. The patient was qualified to surgical biopsy and histopathological examination of the sample disclosed Chondrosarcoma G II.

Clear cell odontogenic carcinoma: a clinicopathologic and immunocytochemical study of 5 cases.

Arch Pathol Lab Med

December 2001

Department of Oral Pathology, School of Stomatology, Peking University, Beijing, People's Republic of China.

Context: Odontogenic tumor composed predominantly of clear cells is a rare neoplasm of the jaws that was initially designated as clear cell odontogenic tumor. Subsequent reports in the literature, however, all have indicated that this tumor exhibits an aggressive behavior characterized by infiltrative local growth, recurrence, or metastases.

Objective: To ascertain the clinicomorphologic features and biologic behavior of this tumor group, we present 5 additional cases using the term clear cell odontogenic carcinoma.

Patterns of abnormal protein expression in target formations and unstructured cores.

Neuromuscul Disord

October 1996

Neuromuscular Research Laboratory, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota 55905, USA.

Streaming of Z-disks and focal myofibrillar degeneration occur in target formations (TF) and unstructured cores (UC). Similar myofibrillar alterations are also part of the spectrum of ultrastructural reactions that can occur in the myopathies associated with myofibrillar degeneration and abnormal foci of desmin positivity. In the latter disorders, there is ectopic overexpression of dystrophin, neural cell adhesion molecule (NCAM), gelsolin, beta-amyloid precursor protein (beta APP) epitopes, alpha 1-antichymotrypsin (alpha 1-ACT), and many abnormal fiber regions are also strongly congophilic.

The two major types of lesions in myofibrillar myopathy consist of hyaline spheroidal structures composed of compacted myofibrillar residues, and nonhyaline lesions that comprise foci of myofibrillar destruction. We employed immunocytochemical analysis to further characterize these abnormalities. The nonhyaline lesions are depleted of actin, alpha-actinin, myosin, and, less consistently, of titin and nebulin.
