This study examines the effects of chronic (i.e., repeated and cumulative) mediated exposure to political violence on ideological beliefs regarding political conflict. It centers on these effects on young viewers, from preadolescents to adolescents. Ideological beliefs refers here to support of war, perception of threat to one's nation, and normative beliefs concerning aggression toward the out-group. A longitudinal study was conducted on a sample of Israeli and Palestinian youths who experience the Israeli-Palestinian conflict firsthand ( = 1,207). Two alternative hypotheses were tested: that chronic exposure via the media increases support for war and aggression and elevates feeling of threat, or that chronic exposure via the media strengthens preexisting beliefs. Results demonstrated that higher levels of exposure were longitudinally related to stronger support for war. Regarding normative beliefs about aggression and threat to one's nation, mediated exposure reinforced initial beliefs, rendering the youths more extreme in their attitudes. These results mostly support the conceptualization of the relation between media violence and behaviors as "reciprocally determined" or "reinforcing spirals." The results are also discussed in light of the differences found between the effect of exposure to political violence firsthand and exposure via the media.

The respiratory tract hosts a diverse microbial community whose composition varies with anatomical location and throughout life. Rothia mucilaginosa, a common commensal of the upper respiratory tract and oral cavity, has recently been recognized for its ability to inhibit bacteria-triggered pro-inflammatory responses. However, its role in modulating the immune response to viral infections such as influenza A virus (IAV) pneumonia, remains unknown.

Pulmonary fibrosis (PF) arises from dysregulated wound healing, leading to excessive extracellular matrix (ECM) deposition and impaired lung function. Macrophages exhibit high plasticity, polarizing to pro-inflammatory M1 during early inflammation and anti-inflammatory, fibrosis-inducing M2 during later stages of PF. Additionally, neutrophils and neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) release mediated by peptidyl arginine deiminase (PAD-4), also play a key role in PF progression.

Soil heavy metal pollution is a major abiotic stressor frequently encountered by plants in conjunction with other biotic stresses like insect herbivory. Yet, it remains largely unexplored how soil metal pollution and insect herbivory act together to influence emissions of plant volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which mediate multiple ecological functions and play crucial roles in atmospheric processes. Here, we assessed the individual and combined effects of soil cadium (Cd) pollution and insect herbivory by Clostera anachoreta on VOC emissions from the seedlings of eastern cottonwood Populus deltoides, and whether these effects depend on plant sex.

Background: Exposure to community violence is associated with increased occurrence of substance use disorders (SUD). The self-medication hypothesis states that heightened negative emotionality may underlie the link between exposure to community violence and SUD. However, it is not well-understood if access to community resources, a broader public health approach, influences the purported psychological mechanisms underlying the link between community violence exposure and SUD.

Recent research has revealed an accumulation of microplastics (MPs) in the environment and human tissues, giving rise to concerns about their potential toxicity. The kidney is a vital organ responsible for various physiological functions. Early kidney development is crucial for ensuring proper structure and function.
