Mucosal surfaces are the main route of entry for pathogens in all living organisms. In the case of teleost fish, mucosal surfaces cover the vast majority of the animal. As these surfaces are in constant contact with the environment, fish are perpetually exposed to a vast number of pathogens. Despite the potential prevalence and variety of pathogens, mucosal surfaces are primarily populated by commensal non-pathogenic bacteria. Indeed, a fine balance between these two populations of microorganisms is crucial for animal survival. This equilibrium, controlled by the mucosal immune system, maintains homeostasis at mucosal tissues. Teleost fish possess a diffuse mucosa-associated immune system in the intestine, with B cells being one of the main responders. Immunoglobulins produced by these lymphocytes are a critical line of defense against pathogens and also prevent the entrance of commensal bacteria into the epithelium. In this review we will summarize recent literature regarding the role of B-lymphocytes and immunoglobulins in gut immunity in teleost fish, with specific focus on immunoglobulin isotypes and the microorganisms, pathogenic and non-pathogenic that interact with the immune system.

Probiotic bacteria including Bifidobacterial species have the capacity to improve intestinal health, but the underlying molecular mechanisms are often not understood. Bifidobacteria are considered keystone species but have a relatively low abundance in the adult intestinal tract. Bifidobacterium colonization depends on degradation of host-derived carbohydrates, including human milk oligosaccharides and mucin-associated oligosaccharides.

Immunoglobulin A (IgA) is a key actor in the mucosal immune system, which moderates interactions between the host and environmental factors such as food antigens and commensal microorganisms. The pathogenesis of IgA nephropathy (IgAN) involves a multistep process starting with deglycosylation of mucosally derived, polymeric IgA1 (dg-IgA1) that reaches the circulation. Dry eye disease (DED) is often seen in patients with polyneuropathies (PNs), but the relationship between the different forms of PNs and DED is not known. In oxaliplatin (Ox-)-treated mice with PNs, morphological changes in the sciatic nerve (SN), dorsal root ganglia (DRG), trigeminal ganglia (TG), and the ocular tissues involved in tear formation were investigated. Recurrent oral ulcers (ROUs) of oral mucosa disease are difficult to cure and relapse easily, and immune imLbalance or dysfunction is considered an essential factor in their occurrence and recurrence. Periplaneta americana extract (PAD), a raw material used in Kangfuxin Liquid and Yunnan Baiyao toothpaste, contains a variety of growth factors such as polypeptides and sticky sugar amino acids that promote tissue repair; this can encourage the growth of the granulation tissue and reduce inflammation on the wound surface. This study aimed to investigate the interventional potential of PAD on recurrent oral ulcers in rats and to elucidate the underlying mechanism of action involving the TLR4/NF-κB and Nrf2/HO-1 signaling pathways.
