A rare and exclusive endoperoxide photoproduct was quantitatively obtained from a thiacalix[4]arene crown-shaped derivative upon irradiation at λ=365 nm; the structure was unambiguously confirmed by (1) H/(13) C NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography. The prerequisites for the formation of the endoperoxide photoproduct have also been discussed. Furthermore, the photochemical reaction rate could be greatly enhanced in the presence of the thiacalix[4]arene platform because it served as a host to capture oxygen.

Polycyclic aromatic endoperoxides are important sources of singlet oxygen ( O ) and their formation from polyacenes is well established. Anthracene carboxyimides are of particular interest as they exhibit excellent antitumor activity and possess unique photochemical properties. However, the photooxygenation of the synthetically versatile anthracene carboxyimide moiety has not been reported due to its competing [4+4] photodimerization reaction.

Reversible [4 + 2] Photooxygenation in Anion-Coordination-Driven-Assembled AL-Type Complexes.

Two bis-bis(urea) ligands ( and ) incorporating the photoactive 9,10-diphenylanthracene fragment were designed for the construction of anion-coordination-driven assemblies and subsequent oxygenation of anthracene moieties for singlet oxygen storage. The corresponding AL-type sulfate complexes [TEA][(SO)()] () and [TEA][(SO)()] (), where TEA = tetraethylammonium, were achieved by coordinating the ligands or with sulfate anions. Both and were able to undergo [4 + 2] photooxygenation to form endoperoxide photoproducts -EPO and -EPO, which can be partially converted back to the original anthracene compounds after heating.

Cholesta-5,7,9(11)-trien-3β-ol (9,11-dehydroprovitamin D, CTL) is used as a fluorescent probe to track the presence and migration of cholesterol in vivo. CTL is known to be photochemically active, but little consideration has been given to the formation efficiency and possible toxicity of its photoproducts. In degassed tetrahydrofuran (THF) solution, we isolated the photoproduct of CTL and of its 25-hydroxy derivative (HOCTL), and X-ray crystal structures were obtained for HOCTL and the photorearrangement product.

Aromatic furazan has numerous pharmacologic and industrial applications. As part of our work on aromatic furazan chemistry and biochemistry, benzofurazan N-oxides, on irradiation using a high-pressure mercury lamp with a Pyrex filter in acetonitrile containing a little water, afforded 1H-azepine-2,7-dione. Mechanistic studies on the photoreaction using a low-pressure mercury lamp and photosensitizer suggest that photosensitized formation of 1H-azepine-2,7-dione with the aromatic hydrocarbon may be carried out by reabsorption of fluorescence.

Light-initiated reversible conversion of macrocyclic endoperoxides derived from half-sandwich rhodium-based metallarectangles.

Although reversible photo-dimerization or oxygenation of anthracene and its derivatives is a common reaction, light-initiated reversible conversion of endoperoxide organometallic frameworks has only rarely been addressed. Herein, a series of tetranuclear organometallic macrocycles, [Cp*Rh(μ-CO-κO)](BP4VA)(OTf) (4), [Cp*Rh(BiBzIm)](BP4VA)(OTf) (5), and [Cp*Rh(DHBQ)](BP4VA)(OTf) (6), were obtained in good yields from the reactions of the binuclear half-sandwich rhodium precursors [Cp*Rh(μ-CO-κO)Cl] (1), [Cp*Rh(BiBzIm)Cl] (2), and [Cp*Rh(DHBQ)Cl] (3) with the 9,10-bis((E)-2-(pyrid-4-yl)vinyl)anthracene (BP4VA) ligand. The photochemical reaction of these metallarectangles was investigated by NMR and UV/vis spectroscopy.
