Bladder tumour treatment in the aarhus region. 25 years of experience.

Department of Oncology and Radiotherapy, University Hospital, Aarhus, Denmark.

Published: May 1990

We report on the clinical studies of bladder tumours carried out at the centre for oncology in the Aarhus area and describe the experience and results of the past three decades. The 1960's saw the replacement of intracavitary techniques with external megavoltage irradiation. In the 1970's a large-scale regional trial was conducted assessing irradiation, which was now the dominant treatment principle, at all stages of the disease. In the 1980's a country-wide randomized trial was designed to compare the effect of cystectomy and definitive irradiation and to address the quality of life question. The report also mentions several associated projects on epidemiology, diagnostics (urinary cytology, DNA distribution) and factors pertinent to treatment (radioprotective agents, CT-based dose planning). Finally, we describe a country-wide randomized trial on the use of adjuvant chemotherapy scheduled for the 1990's.

Objective: Bictegravir or dolutegravir based antiretroviral therapy are first-line HIV treatments. However, no trial has recruited enough participants to estimate the most effective treatment, and there is little evidence on the comparative effectiveness of bictegravir and other available antiretrovirals, like efavirenz and raltegravir.

Methods: We emulated a four-arm target trial using country-wide data from Mexico.

Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) poses a global health challenge with high morbidity and mortality rates. Early detection and prompt intervention are critical in preventing progression to end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) and cardiovascular complications. Effective CKD management requires comprehensive care packages that integrate both pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions within collaborative, team-based models, aiming to enhance patient outcomes and overall quality of life.

Introduction: We report head-to-head comparison of the bivalent and quadrivalent HPV vaccine efficacies against immediate precursors of cervical cancer from 15 years' country-wide cancer registry follow-up of phase III trial cohorts and an age-aligned cohort of unvaccinated women.

Methods: These individually and/or clusterrandomized cohorts of HPV6/11/16/18- and HPV16/18-vaccinated and unvaccinated women were enrolled, respectively, in 2002, 2004, and 2003/2005. The trial cohorts comprised initially 16- to 17-year-old HPV6/11/16/18-vaccinated FUTURE II (NCT00092534) participants (866) and HPV16/18-vaccinated PATRICIA (NCT00122681) and 012 trial (NCT00169494) participants (2,465), and 16,526 initially 16- to 19-year-old unvaccinated controls.

Background: Statistical and machine learning models are commonly used to estimate spatial and temporal variability in exposure to environmental stressors, supporting epidemiological studies. We aimed to compare the performances, strengths and limitations of six different algorithms in the retrospective spatiotemporal modeling of daily birch and grass pollen concentrations at a spatial resolution of 1 km across Switzerland.

Methods: Daily birch and grass pollen concentrations were available from 14 measurement sites in Switzerland for 2000-2019.

The varicella zoster virus, a neurotropic herpesvirus, has been hypothesized to play a role in the pathophysiology of dementia, such as through neuroinflammatory processes or intracerebral vasculopathy. Using unique natural experiments, our group has previously found that live-attenuated herpes zoster (HZ) vaccination reduced the incidence of new diagnoses of dementia in both Wales and Australia. To inform further research and ultimately clinical care, it is crucial to understand at which stage of the disease course of dementia the HZ vaccine has its effect.
