Modulation of metabotropic glutamate 2 (mGlu2) receptor function has huge potential for treating psychiatric and neurological diseases. Development of drugs acting on mGlu2 receptors depends on the development and use of translatable animal models of disease. We report here a stop codon mutation at cysteine 407 in Grm2 (cys407*) that is common in some Wistar rats. Therefore, researchers in this field need to be aware of strains with this mutation. Our genotypic survey found widespread prevalence of the mutation in commercial Wistar strains, particularly those known as Han Wistar. Such Han Wistar rats are ideal for research into the separate roles of mGlu2 and mGlu3 receptors in CNS function. Previous investigations, unknowingly using such mGlu2 receptor-lacking rats, provide insights into the role of mGlu2 receptors in behaviour. The Grm2 mutant rats, which dominate some selectively bred lines, display characteristics of altered emotionality, impulsivity and risk-related behaviours and increased voluntary alcohol intake compared with their mGlu2 receptor-competent counterparts. In addition, the data further emphasize the potential therapeutic role of mGlu2 receptors in psychiatric and neurological disease, and indicate novel methods of studying the role of mGlu2 and mGlu3 receptors. This article is part of the Special Issue entitled 'Metabotropic Glutamate Receptors, 5 years on'.

Investigating intrauterine exposure to methamphetamine on serine-threonine kinase pathway in male rat testis.

Cell Mol Biol (Noisy-le-grand)

January 2025

Department of Physiology, Faculty of Medicine, Tehran Medical Sciences, Islamic Azad University, Tehran, Iran.

Article Synopsis
  • Intrauterine exposure to methamphetamine (METH) during pregnancy negatively impacts testicular development in offspring, leading to apoptosis in spermatids.
  • Research focused on proteins involved in sperm growth pathways, particularly TSSK and RIPK2, showing significant changes in their expression levels due to METH exposure.
  • Findings indicated that METH exposure resulted in decreased TSSK expression, increased RIPK2 expression, thinner germ layers, more inflammatory cells, and a reduction in the thickness of seminiferous tubules in rat testes.

A pathological condition in the peripheral nerve tissue, which provides the connection between the organism and the external environment, negatively affects the standard of living. The nerve tissue histotechnology is of serious importance both for scientific studies and for clinical diagnosis. The fixation, which is one of the leading procedures for histological examination of tissues, aims to preserve tissue morphology.

Role of antioxidative stress activity of Fucoxanthin nanoparticle as hepatoprotective in diabetic rats.

Pak J Pharm Sci

January 2025

Department of Basic Veterinary Medicine, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Airlangga, University, Surabaya, Indonesia.

This study attempts to prove that the antioxidant effect of fucoxanthin nanoparticles can prevent streptozotocin-induced rat liver damage. Fucoxanthin nanoparticles are synthesized using the high-energy ball milling method. Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) was then used to describe the sizes of the fucoxanthin nanoparticles.

Corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) and urocortins (UCN1, UCN2 and UCN3) belong to the same CRF family of neuropeptides. They regulate the neuroendocrine, autonomic and behavioral responses to stress via two CRF receptors (CRF1 and CRF2). Stress, anxiety and depression affects the activity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and the serotoninergic neurotransmission, both being regulated by CRF and CRF-related peptides.
