Background. Images of head CT for the supratentorial compartment are sometimes recommended to be reconstructed with a thickness of 8-10 mm to achieve lesion conspicuity. However, additional images of a thin slice may not be routinely provided for patients with trauma in the emergency room (ER). We investigated the diagnostic sensitivity of a head CT, where axial images were 10 mm thick slices, in cases of linear skull fractures. Methods. Two trauma surgeons retrospectively reviewed head CT with 10 mm slices and skull X-rays of patients admitted to the ER that were diagnosed with a linear skull fracture. All patients had undergone both head CT and skull X-rays (n = 410). Result. The diagnostic sensitivity of head CT with a thickness of sequential 10 mm was 89% for all linear skull fractures but only 56% for horizontal fractures. This CT technique with 10 mm slices missed 6% of patients with linear skull fractures. False-negative diagnoses were significantly more frequent for older (≥55 years) than for young (<15 years) individuals (p = 0.048). Conclusions. A routine head CT of the supratentorial region for patients in the ER with head injuries requires both thick-slice images to visualize cerebral hemispheres and thin-slice images to detect skull fractures of the cranial vault.

Objective: Ultrasonographic examination is easy, fast, safe, and used in various fields; however, its application to the facial area has been limited. Complex anatomical structures are mixed within thin, soft tissues in the facial region; therefore, understanding their structural characteristics is crucial. This study aimed to use ultrasonography to obtain information on the layered structure and soft tissue thickness of the eye area around the orbicularis oculi muscle and provide guidance for clinical practice.

Background: This study evaluates the efficacy of carbon fiber reinforced Polyetheretherketone (Cfr-PEEK) in fixation after sagittal split ramus osteotomy (SSRO) by comparing it with titanium in vitro.
Methods: Twenty-eight sheep hemimandibles were randomly assigned to four groups for SSRO surgery. Fixation was performed with a 4-hole titanium mini plate for 5 mm advancement in Group 1, with a 4-hole Cfr-PEEK mini plate for 5 mm advancement for Group 2, with a 4-hole titanium mini plate for 10 mm advancement for Group 3, and with a 4-hole Cfr-PEEK mini plate for 10 mm advancement for Group 4.

Current understanding of the histology of the dermoskeleton of tetrapods comes from fossilized and recent remains of skulls, osteoderms, carapace, plastron and other postcranial material which were always investigated using linear cross polarized light (LCPL) microscopy. The pectoral girdle of vast majority of non-amniote tetrapods, including temnospondyls evolved large ventrally located dermal bones- the interclavicle and a pair of clavicles. Despite that, there is a lack of information about the bone tissue structure from these postcranial dermal bones.

As lineages become separated in time, they are expected to accumulate mutational (or developmental-genetic) differences that influence the macroevolutionary trajectories of those lineages even under similar environmental conditions. Here, we compare the dynamics of phenotypic evolution in radiations of scincid lizards from Australia and Madagascar that are separated by more than 100 million years of independent evolution and show rampant phenotypic parallelism. We collected linear measurements of the skull, limbs, and limb girdles from micro-CT scans of 94 Australian and 29 Malagasy species.

Objective: To explore the correlation between posterior fossa crowding and the occurrence of classical trigeminal neuralgia (TN).
Methods: A total of 60 patients diagnosed with classical TN and 60 age- and sex-matched healthy volunteers were included as a control group for a case-control study. All subjects underwent high-resolution 3D magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examinations (including 3D-FIESTA and 3D-TOF MRA sequences).
