A procedure for quantitative estimation of lactoferrin is developed using the "sandwich" type of immunoenzymatic assay. Preparation of lactoferrin was purified from women colostrum by means of ion exchange chromatography; the sorbent (a ligand-containing complex of lactoferrin) was synthesized; the antibody conjugate against lactoferrin and peroxidase from horseradish was prepared; optimal conditions of the immunoenzymatic assay were selected. Concentration of lactoferrin in donor blood serum or plasma constituted 0.5-3.3 mg/ml; distinct alterations of the lactoferrin content were not found in blood of patients maintained on artificial circulation or in the blood used for transfusion.

Background: Viral hepatitis is a disease that is more prevalent among individuals residing in remote regions and in contexts of social vulnerability. The objective of this study was to ascertain the seroprevalence of hepatitis A (HAV), B (HBV), and C (HCV) in vulnerable communities in the rural area of São João do Piauí (SJP), northern Brazil.

Methods: Immunoenzymatic assays were employed to detect the presence of anti-HAV (total and IgM), HBsAg, anti-HBc, anti-HBs, and anti-HCV serological markers in serum samples.

Association of RS1126478 (LTF) with molar-incisor and generalized periodontitis.

Clin Oral Investig

November 2024

Department of Prosthodontics and Periodontics, Piracicaba Dental School, University of Campinas, Piracicaba, São Paulo, Brazil.

Objectives: LTF SNP rs1126478 (T>C) could modulate Lactoferrin function and release and has been associated with periodontal disease in different locations before, but not in America. Thus, this study aimed to assess the association between this SNP and Grade C Periodontitis (Generalized (PerioC-G) and Molar Incisor Pattern (PerioC-MIP)) and seek a relationship between its presence and LTF gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) production.

Material And Methods: Oral cells from 361 Brazilians and 375 North Americans patients (Diseased and Health Controls (PH) from both locations) were collected.

Indoxyl sulfate (IS) is one of the most potent uraemic toxins involved in the progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD) through the induction of inflammation and oxidative stress. This study assessed the potential benefits of reducing IS concentrations through dialysis treatment to improve renal function, inflammation, and oxidative stress. A prospective, observational cohort study of 50 patients with CKD undergoing dialysis treatment was conducted.

Endothelial injury indices, such as Endothelial Activation and Stress Index (EASIX), modified EASIX (m-EASIX), and simplified EASIX (s-EASIX) scores, have been previously associated with chimeric antigen receptor-T (CAR-T) cell immunotherapy complications. Soluble urokinase-type plasminogen activator receptor (suPAR), growth differentiation factor-15 (GDF-15), and soluble C5b-9 (sC5b-9) have been described as markers of endothelial injury post-hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. In the current study, we examined whether suPAR, GDF-15, and sC5b-9 levels were associated with endothelial injury indices in adult CAR-T cell recipients.

Malaria represents a challenging global public health task, with being the predominant parasite in Brazil and the most widely distributed species throughout the world. Developing a vaccine against malaria demands innovative strategies, and targeting gametocyte antigens shows promise for blocking transmission prevention. Among these antigens, Pvs47, expressed in gametocytes, has shown remarkable efficacy in transmission blocking.
