Article Abstract

Elastography is a technique that measures and maps the local elastic property of biological tissues. Aiming for detection of micron-scale inclusions, various optical elastography, especially optical coherence elastography (OCE), techniques have been investigated over the past decade. The challenges of current optical elastography methods include the decrease in elastographic resolution as compared with its parent imaging resolution, the detection sensitivity and accuracy, and the cost of the overall system. Here we report for the first time, we believe, on an elastography technique-crawling wave optical coherence elastography (CRW-OCE)-which significantly lowers the requirements on the imaging speed and opens the path to high-resolution and high-sensitivity OCE at relatively low cost. Methods of crawling wave excitation, data acquisition, and crawling wave tracking are presented.

Optimal crawling: From mechanical to chemical actuation.

Taking inspiration from the crawling motion of biological cells on a substrate, we consider a physical model of self-propulsion where the spatiotemporal driving can involve both a mechanical actuation by active force couples and a chemical actuation through controlled mass turnover. When the material turnover is slow and the mechanical driving dominates, we find that the highest velocity at a given energetic cost is reached when the actuation takes the form of an active force configuration propagating as a traveling wave. As the rate of material turnover increases, and the chemical driving starts to dominate the mechanical one, such a peristalsis-type control progressively loses its efficacy, yielding to a standing-wave-type driving which involves an interplay between the mechanical and chemical actuation.

Emergency preparedness initiatives are a Medicare condition of participation in home healthcare, yet limited evidence on the impact of associated programming is available. The purpose of this exploratory pilot study was to examine the outcomes of an individualized emergency preparedness educational program provided by a physical therapist (PT) in the homes of older adults. The investigators recruited older adults (n = 30) using convenience sampling.

Ultrasonic surface acoustic wave elastography: A review of basic theories, technical developments, and medical applications.

Physiological and pathological changes in tissues often cause changes in tissue mechanical properties, making tissue elastography an effective modality in medical imaging. Among the existing elastography methods, ultrasound elastography is of great interest due to the inherent advantages of ultrasound imaging technology, such as low cost, portability, safety, and wide availability. However, most current ultrasound elastography methods are based on the bulk shear wave; they can image deep tissues but cannot image superficial tissues.

Bionic Snail Robot Enhanced by Poroelastic Foams Crawls Using Direct and Retrograde Waves.

Snails employ a distinctive crawling mechanism in which the pedal waves travel along the foot and interact with the mucus to promote efficient movement on various substrates. Inspired by the concavities on the pedal wave, we develop a new bionic snail robot that introduces transverse patterns in a longitudinal wave to periodically change the friction. The poroelastic foam serves as flexible constraint and fills the robot's internal cavity.

Metachronal motions are ubiquitous in terrestrial and aquatic organisms and have attracted substantial attention in engineering for their potential applications. Hard-magnetic soft materials are shown to provide new opportunities for metachronal wave-modulated robotic locomotion by multi-agent active morphing in response to external magnetic fields. However, the design and optimization of such magnetic soft robots can be complex, and the fabrication and magnetization processes are often delicate and time-consuming.
