Atypical diabetes arising from SHORT syndrome: a case report.

Front Endocrinol (Lausanne)

December 2024

Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism, The First Affiliated Hospital of Ningbo University, Ningbo, Zhejiang, China.

Short stature, joint hyperextension, ocular hypotension, Rieger abnormalities, and delayed tooth eruption (SHORT) syndrom is a rare primary autosomal dominant genetic disorder mainly caused by pathogenic loss-of-function variants in the phosphoinositide-3-kinase regulatory subunit 1 (PIK3R1) gene. We report the case of a Chinese adult female patient with SHORT syndrome, carrying a PIK3R1 gene variant (c.1945C > T), who developed abnormal glucose metabolism and severe postprandial insulin resistance over 9 years.

Background: Pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE) is characterized by aberrant calcification of elastic tissues throughout the body causing varying degrees of skin, cardiac, and ocular disease. Although PXE is classically regarded as an autosomal recessive disease, recent reports have demonstrated a haploinsufficiency phenotype, in which carriers of monoallelic ATP-binding cassette transporter () gene mutations demonstrate mild manifestations of PXE. In this case report, we describe a patient with a monoallelic mutation and atypical angioid streaks.

Multidisciplinary unravelling Cogan's syndrome post-C-section: insights into diagnosis, treatment and a possible identified new trigger.

BMJ Case Rep

December 2024

Department of Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery, SLK-Kliniken Heilbronn GmbH, Heilbronn, Germany

We present a case series consisting of three female patients in their 30s with presumed autoimmune uveitis resembling Cogan's syndrome following caesarean sections (C-sections) with severe intraoperative bleeding and the use of chitosan-tamponade, exhibiting a combination of varying ocular and auditory symptoms postoperatively. Our patients displayed a range of inflammatory ocular changes, including stromal keratitis, panuveitis, retinal infiltrates, haemorrhages, optic disc swelling, and intraretinal and subretinal fluid, along with otalgia and hearing loss, consistent with typical and atypical Cogan's syndrome. Treatment involved systemic corticosteroids, resulting in variable outcomes.

Traditionally, cases are divided into typical and atypical ON.

Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is an incredibly rare disease that is characterized by the overproduction of histiocytes and lymphocytes, which then start to attack the body instead of just invasive pathogens. It has been known to affect many organs including most commonly blood cells and bone marrow, but it has also been known to affect the liver, spleen, skin, and the brain. Ocular involvement is rare and is mostly associated with HLH's effect on other body systems (i.
