Background And Aim: Abnormal cholesterol metabolism may contribute to the pathogenesis of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and fibrosis. miR-33 and miR-144 regulate adenosine triphosphate binding cassette transporter (ABCA1) and other target genes involved in cholesterol efflux, fatty acid oxidation and inflammation. We explored relationships between non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and the hepatic expression of ABCA1/ABCG1, as well as other target genes regulated by miR-33 (carnitine O-octanoyltransferase, CROT and hydroxyacyl-CoA-dehydrogenase β-subunit, HADHB) and miR-144 (toll-like receptor-2, TLR2). Moreover, we evaluated whether the expression of these genes is correlated with miR-33a/b and miR-144 expression in Mexican individuals with morbid obesity.
Methods: Eighty-four morbidly obese subjects undergoing bariatric surgery were included in this study. Liver biopsies were obtained to measure hepatic triglyceride and free cholesterol contents, as well as ABCA1, ABCG1, CROT, HADHB, TLR2, miR-33a/b and miR-144 expression.
Results: Hepatic free cholesterol content was significantly increased in NASH as compared to non-NASH subjects, while ABCA1 and ABCG1 protein levels significantly decreased with NASH and fibrosis progression. The relative expression of miR-33a and miR-144 correlated inversely with ABCA1 but not with ABCG1 protein levels. Moreover, both miRNAs increased significantly in NASH individuals. miR-33 target genes CROT and HADHB correlated inversely with miR-33a. However, the expression of these genes was not associated with NASH.
Conclusions: miR-33a/144 and their target gene ABCA1 may contribute to the pathogenesis of NASH in morbidly obese subjects.

Background: The adoption of leadless pacemakers (LPMs) is increasing, yet the impact of body mass index (BMI) on procedural outcomes remains underexplored.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to explore the impact of BMI on in-hospital outcomes for patients receiving LPM implantation.
Methods: Data from the National Inpatient Sample from 2018-2021 were analyzed for patients older than 18 years who underwent LPM implantation, with specific inclusion and exclusion criteria applied.

Purpose: Obesity is a major risk factor for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), associated with conditions like type 2 diabetes, hypertension, stroke, cancer, and premature death. OSA involves sleep-breathing interruptions, with over 60% of obese individuals diagnosed through polysomnography. This study explores sleep issues in individuals considering bariatric surgery.

Sleeve gastrectomy with proximal jejunal bypass (SG with PJB) is often preferred for patients with higher body mass index (BMI) and inadequate glycemic control. This study aimed to compare the outcomes of SG and SG with PJB, focusing on glycemic control and BMI in prediabetic and diabetic patients. Preoperative analysis revealed differences in age and hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels between groups: SG with PJB patients were older (38.

Objective: To evaluate the prevalence of shoulder pain, level of functional performance, and morphological involvement of the rotator cuff on ultrasound in morbidly obese patients.
Methods: The study included 54 morbidly obese patients receiving follow-up care in a bariatric surgery outpatient clinic, which were compared with a control group consisting of 49 participants. Presence of shoulder pain, shoulder functional performance, ultrasound of the rotator cuff and blood tests were the parameters evaluated.

Recent studies have suggested that the interaction between diet and an individual's genetic predisposition can determine the likelihood of obesity and various metabolic disorders. The current study aimed to examine the association of dietary branched-chain amino acids(BCAAs) and aromatic amino acids(AAAs) with the expression of the leptin and FTO genes in the visceral and subcutaneous adipose tissues of individuals undergoing surgery. This cross-sectional study was conducted on 136 Iranian adults, both men and women, aged ≥18 years.
