We demonstrate an acoustofluidic device using Lamb waves (LWs) to manipulate polystyrene (PS) microparticles suspended in a sessile droplet of water. The LW-based acoustofluidic platform used in this study is advantageous in that the device is actuated over a range of frequencies without changing the device structure or electrode pattern. In addition, the device is simple to operate and cheap to fabricate. The LWs, produced on a piezoelectric substrate, attenuate inside the fluid and create acoustic streaming flow (ASF) in the form of a poloidal flow with toroidal vortices. The PS particles experience direct acoustic radiation force (ARF) in addition to being influenced by the ASF, which drive the concentration of particles to form a ring. This phenomenon was previously attributed to the ASF alone, but the present experimental results confirm that the ARF plays an important role in forming the particle ring, which would not be possible in the presence of only the ASF. We used a range of actuation frequencies (45-280 MHz), PS particle diameters (1-10 μm), and droplet volumes (5, 7.5, and 10 μL) to experimentally demonstrate this phenomenon.

Multi-talker speech intelligibility requires successful separation of the target speech from background speech. Successful speech segregation relies on bottom-up neural coding fidelity of sensory information and top-down effortful listening. Here, we studied the interaction between temporal processing measured using Envelope Following Responses (EFRs) to amplitude modulated tones, and pupil-indexed listening effort, as it related to performance on the Quick Speech-in-Noise (QuickSIN) test in normal-hearing adults.

Microbubble-facilitated sonoporation is a rapid, versatile, and non-viral intracellular delivery technique with potential for clinical and ex vivo cell engineering applications. We developed a micropatterning-based approach to investigate the impact of cell shape on sonoporation efficacy. Cationic microbubbles were employed to enhance sonoporation by binding to the cell membrane electrostatically.

Although air sinuses are prevalent in odontocetes and are an integral component of their sound reception system, the acoustic function of these air-filled structures remains largely unknown. To address this, we developed a numerical model using computed tomography data from a Yangtze finless porpoise (Neophocaena asiaeorientalis asiaeorientalis) to investigate the role of the air sinuses in sound reception. By comparing sound reception characteristics between model cases with and without the air sinuses, we found that the air sinuses improved sound reception directivity.

Purpose: To evaluate the ability of acoustic radiation force impulse (ARFI) elastography in differentiating benign from malignant etiologies of splenomegaly based on differences in splenic stiffness.
Materials And Methods: Between September 2020 and November 2022, we evaluated 40 patients with splenomegaly-defined by a splenic long axis greater than 13 cm and/or a short axis greater than 6 cm, without visible focal or infiltrative mass lesions-using abdominal ultrasound at our university hospital. Each patient also underwent a standardized ARFI elastographic assessment of the enlarged spleen, with data collected prospectively.

Ultrasound (US) can easily penetrate media with excellent spatial precision corresponding to its wavelength. Naturally, US plays a pivotal role in the echolocation abilities of certain mammals such as bats and dolphins. In addition, medical US generated by transducers interact with tissues via delivering ultrasonic energy in the modes of heat generation, exertion of acoustic radiation force (ARF), and acoustic cavitation.
