The neural basis of self-ambivalence: an ERP study.

BMC Psychol

December 2024

School of Economy and Management, Southeast University, Nanjing, China.

The primary objective of this study was to investigate the neural basis of self-ambivalence, a phenomenon firmly established by behavioral research but whose underlying brain mechanisms have been less explored. Employing EEG methods and a modified self-reference paradigm, we analyzed event-related potentials using a linear mixed model to determine whether self-ambivalence processing exhibits a distinct neural representation. The results indicated that self-ambivalence processing primarily affected the late components (N2, N450, and P3), with N450 activation in the midline brain regions showing a significant positive correlation with scores on the Dialectical Self Scale.

Article Synopsis
  • - High myopia is increasingly linked to blindness and can negatively affect mental health by influencing the brain and gut microbiome, making it important for understanding overall health connections.
  • - The study hypothesized that visual issues from high myopia might disrupt gut health, potentially leading to anxiety and depression, testing this through genetic analysis in large cohorts.
  • - Results indicated a significant genetic link between high myopia and anxiety, with part of this effect mediated by gut microbiome changes, suggesting a need for new approaches in preventive medicine.

This study evaluates the neurocognitive and electrophysiological effects of 1-year memantine treatment in 14 adolescents and young adults (mean age 24 years) with sickle cell disease (SCD, incluing sickle cell anaemia and sickle cell β-thalassemia), hypothesizing improvements in cognitive functions and neural processing. Participants underwent assessments using subtests from the Wechsler Intelligence Scale and a computerized task-switching paradigm with concurrent event-related potential (ERP) recordings, both before and after the treatment period. Assessments focused on processing speed, working memory, attention and executive function.

Developing solid-state batteries (SSB) with a lithium metal electrode (LME) using only one type of solid electrolyte (SE) is a significant challenge since no SE fits all the requirements imposed by both electrodes. A possible solution is using multilayer SSBs with an LME where the drawbacks of each SE are overcome by using layers of different SEs. However, research on inorganic SE|SE heteroionic interfaces is still quite preliminary, especially regarding oxide|sulfide heteroionic interfaces.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the link between different types of epilepsy and atrial fibrillation (AF), aiming to clarify if one condition causes the other.
  • Researchers utilized genetic data from large populations to evaluate correlations and potential causal relationships between ten epilepsy subtypes and AF.
  • Findings indicate that focal epilepsy with hippocampal sclerosis raises the risk of AF, emphasizing the importance of monitoring heart health in epilepsy patients and identifying specific DNA methylation markers related to this increased risk.
