Micron-sized ablated surface structures with nano-sized 'bumpy' structures were produced by femtosecond (fs) laser ablation of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) film under ambient conditions. Upon just a single step, the processed surface exhibited hierarchical micro/nano morphology. In addition, due to the tribological properties of PTFE, polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) could be replicated from the laser-ablated PTFE surface without anti-adhesive surface treatment. By controlling the design of the ablated patterns, tunable wettability and superhydrophobicity were achieved on both PTFE and PDMS replica surfaces. Furthermore, using fs laser ablation direct writing, a flexible superhydrophobic PDMS cage formed by superhydrophobic patterns encompassing the unmodified region was demonstrated for aqueous droplet positioning and trapping. Through evaporation-driven colloidal self-assembly in this superhydrophobic cage, a colloidal droplet containing polystyrene (PS) particles dried into a self-assembled photonic crystal, whose optical band gap could be manipulated by the particle size.

Frustrated Lewis pair chemistry (FLP) occupy a crucial position in nonmetal-mediated catalysis, especially toward activation of inert gas molecules. Yet, one formidable issue of homogeneous FLP catalysts is their instability on preservation and recycling. Here we contribute a general solution that marries the polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) with a structurally specific frustrated Lewis acid to fabricate porous polymer networks, which can form water-insensitive heterogeneous FLP catalysts upon employing Lewis base substrates.

Realistically, green manufacturing of transparent superhydrophobic surfaces (SHSs) and high liquid impalement resistance for outdoor engineering are very necessary but pretty challenging. To address this, an almost all-waterborne system composed of synthesized partially open-cage fluorinated polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane bearing a pair of -OH (poc-FPOSS-2OH), silica sol, and resin precursor is engineered. The transparent SHSs facilely formed by this system are featured with the exclusive presence of wrapped silica nanoparticle (SiNP) dendritic networks at solid-gas interfaces.

Smart surfaces with superhydrophobic/superhydrophilic characteristics can be controlled by external stimuli, such as temperature. These transitions are attributed to the molecular-level conformation of the grafted polymer chains due to the varied interactions at the interface. Here, tunable surfaces were prepared by grafting two well-known thermo-responsive polymers, poly(-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) and poly(oligoethylene glycol)methyl ether acrylate (POEGMA) onto micro-pollen particles of uniform morphology and roughness.

Fullerene (C), a π-conjugated cage molecule consisting of 60 sp-hybridized carbon atoms that are arranged into perfect icosahedral symmetry, is one of the most extensively studied nanocarbon materials by virtue of its characteristic spherical structure, fascinating optoelectronic properties, and widespread applications in material science. To implement practical applications, C is generally used as a building motif to assemble into various ordered superstructures. Unlike the controllable face-to-face π-π interactions of planar π-conjugated molecules, the π-π interactions between the three-dimensional spherical C units are random and directionless, which generally lead to complicated aggregated structures and unpredictable properties.
