An in-fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer was proposed and fabricated, which was based on a sandwich-like etched single mode fiber driven by only one acoustic transducer. It succeeded the feature of fast tuning and would not introduce frequency shift in the transmission spectrum. Based on it, a fast tuning dual-wavelength laser with a two-wavelength spacing around 3.5 nm was proved with a tuning range of about 3.6 nm, covering wavelengths from 1561.6 nm to 1568.9 nm.

In fiber-optic sensing, long-distance transmission and demodulation of weak signal light (SL) are critical. This study improves the system by relocating an external cavity tunable laser (ECTL) to the transmission end. Directly injecting the SL into the ECTL modulates the output light and uses the high-power ECTL light for transmission, reducing loss.

A highly sensitive optical fiber gas pressure sensor with temperature monitoring is proposed and demonstrated. It is based on a slightly tapered fiber with an inner micro-cavity forming an in-fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI), and a micro-channel is drilled into the lateral wall of the in-fiber micro-cavity using a femtosecond laser to allow gas to flow in. Due to the dependence of the refractive index (RI) of air inside the micro-cavity on its gas pressure and the high RI sensitivity of the MZI, the device is extremely sensitive to gas pressure.

Chemotherapy is one of the conventional treatments for cancer in clinical practice. However, poor delivery efficiency, systemic toxicity, and the lack of pharmacokinetic monitoring during treatment are the critical limitations of current chemotherapy. Herein, we reported a brand-new antitumor drug delivery strategy that harnesses an optical fiber endoscopically therapeutic probe.

A fiber-optic urea sensor based on surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and Mach-Zehnder interference (MZI) combined principle was designed and implemented. By plating gold film on the single-mode-no-core-thin-core-single-mode fiber structure, we successfully excited both SPR and MZI, and constructed two parallel detection channels for simultaneously measurement of urea concentration and temperature. Urease was immobilized on the gold film by metal-organic zeolite skeleton (ZIF-8), which can not only fix a large number of urease to improve measurement sensitivity of urea, but also protect urease activity to ensure the sensor stability.

This study investigates the utilization of an in-fiber interferometer embedded in polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) to develop a highly sensitive tactile sensor. The tapered mode-field mismatch structure is more conducive to stimulating strong high order modes to promote the sensitivity of the sensor. Experimental investigations are conducted to study the sensing performance of the sensor, resulting in a sensitivity of 23.
