We describe for the first time the chemical synthesis of a tetramannoside, containing both α (1→2) and β (1→2) linkages. Dodecylthio (lauryl) glycosides were prepared from odorless dodecyl thiol and used as donors for the glycosylation steps. This tetramannoside, was coupled to a mantyl group, and revealed to be a perfect substrate of β-mannosyltransferase Bmt3, confirming the proposed specificity and allowing the preparation of a pentamannoside sequence (β Man (1,2) β Man (1,2) α Man (1,2) α Man (1,2) α Man) usable as a novel substrate for further elongation studies.

Background: Sepsis surveillance using electronic health record (EHR)-based data may provide more accurate epidemiologic estimates than administrative data, but experience with this approach to estimate population-level sepsis burden is lacking.

Methods: This was a retrospective cohort study including all adults admitted to publicly-funded hospitals in Hong Kong between 2009-2018. Sepsis was defined as clinical evidence of presumed infection (clinical cultures and treatment with antibiotics) and concurrent acute organ dysfunction (≥2 point increase in baseline SOFA score).

Objective: To compare the effects of three kinds of RNA extraction methods, namely a modified SDS method, TRIzol reagent method, and CTAB method, so as to obtain an economical and efficient method for RNA extraction from .

Methods: The modified SDS method, TRIzol reagent method and CTAB method were applied to extract the RNA from . A nucleic acid protein analyzer was used to measure the concentration and purity of RNA.

The heterobimetallic complexes [(eta5-C5H5)Ru(CO)(mu-dppm)Mn(CO)4] and [(eta5-C5Me5)Ru(mu-dppm)(mu-CO)2Mn(CO)3] (dppm = bis-diphenylphosphinomethane) have been prepared by reacting the hydridic complexes [(eta5-C5H5)Ru(dppm)H] and [(eta5-C5Me5)Ru(dppm)H], respectively, with the protonic [HMn(CO)5] complex. The bimetallic complexes can also be synthesized through metathetical reactions between [(eta5-C5R5)Ru(dppm)Cl] (R = H or Me) and Li+[Mn(CO)5]-. Although the complexes fail to catalyze the hydrogenation of CO2 to formic acid, they catalyze the coupling reactions of epoxides with carbon dioxide to yield cyclic carbonates.

The indenylruthenium hydride complex (eta(5)-C(9)H(7))Ru(dppm)H was found to be active in catalyzing the hydration of nitriles to amides. The chloro analogue (eta(5)-C(9)H(7))Ru(dppm)Cl was, however, found to be inactive. Density functional theory calculations at the B3LYP level provide explanations for the effectiveness of the hydride complex and the ineffectiveness of the chloro complex in the catalysis.
