The role of pore size distribution in the adsorption of phenol in aqueous solutions on polyethylene terephthalate (PET)-based activated carbons (ACs) has been analyzed. The ACs were prepared from PET and mixtures of PET with coal-tar pitch (CTP) by means of carbonization and subsequent steam and carbon dioxide activation at 850 and 950 °C, respectively. The resultant ACs were characterized on the basis of similarities in their surface chemical features and differences in their micropore size distributions. The adsorption of phenol was carried out in static conditions at ambient temperature. The pseudo-second order kinetic model and Langmuir model were found to fit the experimental data very well. The different adsorption capacities of the ACs towards phenol were attributed to differences in their micropore size distributions. Adsorption capacity was favoured by the volume of pores with a size smaller than 1.4 nm; but restricted by pores smaller than 0.8 nm.

This paper presented the preparation, characterization, and adsorption properties of Brazil nut shell activated carbon for catechol removal from aqueous solutions. The equilibrium adsorption of catechol molecules on this activated was experimentally quantified at pH 6 and temperatures ranging from 25 to 55 °C, and at 25 °C and pH ranging from 6 to 10. These results were utilized to elucidate the role of surface functionalities through statistical physics calculations.

Background: Flavonoids are among the most important compounds found in plants, since laboratory studies have shown them to be a daily requirement in human diets due to their various health benefits. Therefore, this study focused on extracting, purifying, and measuring the antioxidant activity of the flavonoid quercetin, which is widely found in plants and possesses a variety of biological activities, from different plant sources.

Methods: The extraction of quercetin was performed using several methods (chemical, physical, and enzymatic) and several extraction solutions (water, ethanol, and chloroform) from several plants (spinach, dill, Onion Skin, , sumac, digalkhasab chemri, and leelwi chemri).

The waste Lentinus edodes stalks from Lentinus edodes processing were used as raw materials by the steam explosion to prepare modified Lentinus edodes stalks dietary fiber and combined with tea polyphenols to form the SE-DF-tea polyphenols complex (SE-DF-TPC). The SE-DF-tea polyphenols mixture (SE-DF-TPM) was prepared according to the complex's optimal adsorption conditions. Fluorescence microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, particle size measurement, thermogravimetric analysis, and X-ray diffraction were used to analyze its structure, and the thermal stability of the complex and its adsorption capacity for lipids, cholesterol, and cholates were studied.

Bimetallic (Ta/Ti, V, Co, Nb) mesoporous MCM-41 nanoparticles were obtained by direct synthesis and hydrothermal treatment. The obtained mesoporous materials were characterized by XRD, XRF, N adsorption/desorption, SEM, TEM, XPS, Raman, UV-Vis, and PL spectroscopy. A more significant effect was observed on the mesoporous structure, typically for MCM-41, and on optic properties if the second metal (Ti, Co) did not belong to the same Vb group with Ta as V and Nb.

Biochar can serve as an activator for potassium ferrate, significantly enhancing the treatment efficiency to antibiotics. However, the mechanism by which biochar activated potassium ferrate remained unclear, necessitating further investigation. Cellulose biochar (CBC) and lignin biochar (LBC) derived by two model compounds which were the highest proportion of content in biomass were adopted to be study object, to investigate the removal efficiency of tetracycline (TC) by ferrate synergetic with CBC and LBC, respectively for the first time, and thoroughly analyzed the adsorption and degradation processes within the reaction system.
