Priapism is defined as an erection lasting for more than 4 hours and can be grouped into 3 distinct subtypes: ischemic (low-flow), stuttering and non-ischemic (high-flow). Herein, we present an interesting case of conversion from a low-flow to high-flow priapism after a distal shunting procedure. This is a rare phenomenon that has a paucity of documented cases. Diagnosis requires prompt clinical suspicion and confirmatory testing including penile cavernosal blood gases and Doppler ultrasound.

Ships and other mobile pollution sources emitted massive ultrafine and low-resistivity particles containing black carbon (BC), which were harmful to human health and were difficult to capture by conventional electrostatic precipitators (ESPs). In this study, nanoscale carbon black was adopted as simulated particles (SP) with similar physicochemical properties for black carbon emitted from ships (SP-BC) to investigate the feasibility of using an ESP with square-grooved collecting plates for the removal of SP-BC at low backpressures. The increased applied voltage significantly improved the total collection of SP-BC whereas may also promote the conversion of relatively larger particle size SP-BC into nano-size below 20 nm.

Lung volume reduction surgery (LVRS) represents an important treatment option in carefully selected patients with end-stage lung emphysema. The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy and safety of nonintubated LVRS compared to intubated LVRS in patients with preoperative hypercapnia and lung emphysema. Between April 2019 and February 2021, n = 92 patients with end-stage lung emphysema and preoperative hypercapnia undergoing unilateral video-assisted thoracoscopic LVRS (VATS-LVRS) performed in epidural anesthesia and mild sedation (nonintubated, group 1) or conventional general anesthesia (intubated, control, group 2) were prospectively enrolled in this study.

Opportunities for process intensification have made continuous biomanufacturing an area of active research. While tangential flow filtration (TFF) is typically employed within the biologics purification train to increase drug substance concentration, single-pass TFF (SPTFF) modifies its format by enabling continuity of this process and achieving a multifold concentration factor through a single-pass over the filtration membranes. In continuous processes feed concentration and flow rate are determined by the preceding unit operations.

Land conversion and climate change are stressing freshwater resources. Riparian areas, streamside vegetation/forest land, are critical for regulating hydrologic processes and riparian buffers are used as adaptive management strategies for mitigating land conversion effects. However, our ability to anticipate the efficacy of current and alternative riparian buffers under changing conditions remains limited.
