Ethnic and genetic differences in bone mass: a review with a hereditary vs environmental perspective.

Am J Clin Nutr

Published: December 1989

Based on a review of the literature, ethnic and genetic factors are significant determinants of bone mass, along with such environmental factors as diet and exercise. Differences in bone density between blacks and whites remain even after adjustment for body mass. Black-white differences in bone mass appear to be related to ethnicity because blacks have not only greater skeletal calcium content, but also greater total body potassium and muscle mass. Genetic studies of twins and parent-offspring pairs reflect strong constitutional associations of both bone mineral content and bone density at commonly measured skeletal sites. At least for females, bone mass accumulation by age 20 y is highly associated with maternal bone mass; up to menopause it is enhanced by child-bearing and lactation; beyond menopause environmental factors seem to dominate. Dietary calcium and physical activity are significant in the control of bone mass. These findings are important for osteoporosis and fractures, especially in elderly people.

Effects of long-term steroid therapy on the results of dental age estimation using pulp/tooth ratio.

J Forensic Odontostomatol

December 2024

Department of Medicine and Health Science "Vincenzo Tiberio", University of Molise, AgeEstimation Project, Campobasso, Italy.

Forensic age estimation is performed by assessing pulp chamber constrictions due to physiological age-related changes in dental radiographs; however, the estimated ages occasionally deviate from the actual ages. In particular, long-term steroid users tend to demonstrate pulp chamber constrictions in all teeth. Because this is uncommon among younger age groups, caution should be exercised when evaluating pulp chamber constriction.

Early neutrophil activation and NETs release in the pristane-induced lupus mice model.

PLoS One

January 2025

Laboratório de Imunologia Celular (LIM-17), Faculdade de Medicina, Universidade de São Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil.

Background: NETosis is recognized as an important source of autoantigens. Therefore, we hypothesized whether the pristane-induced lupus mice model shows early activation of neutrophils, the presence of low-density granulocytes (LDGs), and neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) release, which could contribute to the development of a lupus phenotype.

Methods: Twelve female wild-type Balb/c mice were intraperitoneally injected with pristane (n = 6; pristane group) or saline (n = 6; control group).

Background: Despite the comparatively high prevalence of possible sarcopenia among young-old adults in the community, there is currently no available and effective social media-based intervention to increase the awareness and change the behavior of the target population to prevent sarcopenia. Using co-design methodology, we developed a multicomponent intervention strategy of health education and exercise for sarcopenia prevention utilizing the TikTok platform.

Objectives: The primary purpose of this study is to examine the feasibility and acceptability of the social media-based intervention to enhance muscle function in community-dwelling young-old adults with possible sarcopenia.

The study aimed to evaluate the potential protection against fractures of oral Q10 supplementation in the tibias of rats exposed to nicotine. Nicotine is known to negatively impact bone density and increase the risk of fractures, in addition to affecting other systems such as the gastrointestinal system, impairing its absorption capacity, negatively affecting bone health. To investigate this, eighty male rats were divided into four groups (n = 20) receiving either nicotine hemisulfate or saline solution (SS) for 28 days.

To assess and compare two techniques of low-level laser application-transgingival (TLLLT) and intrasulcular (ILLLT)-used in photobiomodulation as an adjunct to basic periodontal therapy (BPT) in patients with periodontitis. A randomized, split-mouth, double-blind clinical trial was conducted, selecting three diseased periodontal sites from different quadrants in each patient. These sites were assigned to one of three treatment groups: SRP (control), SRP + TLLLT (test 1), and SRP + ILLLT (test 2).
