Mixture Assessment Factors (MAFs) have been proposed in the European Union (EU) as a rapid and simple way of protecting aquatic organisms from the combined effects of unintentional chemical mixtures when regulating industrial chemicals under the REACH (EU Regulation on the registration, evaluation, authorisation, and restriction of chemicals) program. A wide range of values has been suggested for the MAF including values of 20 or larger. In this paper we performed a series of case studies using composition data from 46,546 mixtures reported in three surveys of chemicals in EU surface waters.

Airborne radioactivity from fossil fuel production systems is poorly characterized, but a recent study showed elevated ambient levels with proximity to oil and gas production wells. Here, we report year-long, high temporal resolution monitoring results of airborne alpha radioactivity from both radon gas and radon progeny attached to particulates immediately northeast of an oil refinery in Commerce City, Colorado, USA, in an environmental justice community of concern. Gas and particle-associated radioactivity contributed nearly evenly to the total alpha radioactivity.

Aims: To compare the medical costs of individuals undergoing lower extremity amputation (LEA) in Belgium with those of amputation-free individuals.
Methods: Belgian citizens undergoing LEAs in 2014 were identified. The median costs per capita in euros for the 12 months preceding and following minor and major LEAs were compared with those of matched amputation-free individuals.
