A long-standing but fundamental question in lightning studies concerns how lightning is initiated inside storms, given the absence of physical conductors. The issue has revolved around the question of whether the discharges are initiated solely by conventional dielectric breakdown or involve relativistic runaway electron processes. Here we report observations of a relatively unknown type of discharge, called fast positive breakdown, that is the cause of high-power discharges known as narrow bipolar events. The breakdown is found to have a wide range of strengths and is the initiating event of numerous lightning discharges. It appears to be purely dielectric in nature and to consist of a system of positive streamers in a locally intense electric field region. It initiates negative breakdown at the starting location of the streamers, which leads to the ensuing flash. The observations show that many or possibly all lightning flashes are initiated by fast positive breakdown.

Introduction: Agitation, a significant psychiatric issue often linked to conditions like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and major depression, invariably pose challenges in emergency settings. Acute agitation occurs in 2.6 % of emergency cases and up to 12.

Objective: To test an associations of online phenotypes of depressive symptoms with polygenic risk scores (PRS) for selected somatic diseases in a population-based cohort.
Material And Methods: Participants in a Russian population-based cohort (=4520) underwent online phenotyping based on the originally developed questionnaire using DSM-5 criteria (DSM phenotypes) and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) questionnaire (HADS phenotypes). After DNA genotyping with microarrays, PRS were calculated using summary statistics from large-scale GWASs (mostly from UK Biobank) for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), coronary heart disease (narrow and broad phenotypes) (CHD), ischemic stroke (IS),diabetes mellitus type 2 (DT2) and migraine (MG).

Strain engineering provides an attractive approach to enhance device performance by modulating the intrinsic electrical properties of materials. This is especially applicable to 2D materials, which exhibit high sensitivity to mechanical stress. However, conventional methods, such as using polymer substrates, to apply strain have limitations in that the strain is temporary and global.

Background: Bipolar disorder (BD) presents with a wide range of symptoms that vary among relatives, casting doubt on categorical illness models. To address this uncertainty, we investigated the heritability and genetic relationships between categorical and dimensional models of BD in a family sample.
Methods: This retrospective study included participants (n = 397 Females, n = 329 Males, mean age 47 yr) in the Amish-Mennonite Bipolar Genetics (AMBiGen) study from North and South America that were assigned categorical mood disorder diagnoses ("narrow" or "broad") by structured psychiatric interview and completed the Mood Disorder Questionnaire (MDQ), which assesses lifetime history of manic symptoms and associated impairment.

Creating van der Waals (vdW) homojunction devices requires materials with narrow bandgaps and high carrier mobilities for bipolar transport, which are crucial for constructing fundamental building blocks like diodes and transistors in a 2D architecture. Following the recent discovery of elemental 2D tellurium, here, we systematically investigate the electrical transport and flicker noise of hydrothermally grown multilayer tellurium field effect transistors. While the devices exhibit a dominant p-type behavior with high hole mobilities up to ∼242 cm V s at room temperature and almost linear current-voltage characteristics down to 77 K, ambipolar behavior was observed in some cases.
