The present investigation was carried out to isolate and characterize bioactive components from Mirabilis jalapa L. radix ( zǐ mò lì gēn). Thin-layer chromatography was used for the separation of spots from fractions of the crude extract. Separated spots were collected for identification of their activities. Free-radical scavenging activity was evaluated by spraying thin-layer chromatography plates (spotted with fractions) with 0.2% of 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl solution. Activity against human pathogens such as Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans were determined using the agar diffusion method. Potential spots were subjected to infrared (IR) analysis and gas chromatography for characterization. Two spots (5F1 and 1F3) showed free-radical scavenging activity. The 1F3 spot was active against both S. aureus and C. albicans, whereas the 5F1 spot was active against S. aureus only. IR spectral analysis indicated that 5F1 spot to be a triterpenoid. Using IR spectral analysis and an IR library search, the 1F3 spot was identified to be a flavone, which may have a hydroxyl group in ring "A" of the flavone nucleus. Our results indicated that the 1F3 and 5F1 spots are potential free-radical scavengers. Both 1F3 and 5F1 exhibited antimicrobial activity. IR spectral analysis coupled with an IR library search indicated 1F3 and 5F1 to be a flavone and a triterpenoid, respectively.

Purpose: To identify the macular retinal layer thickness changes in polyarteritis nodosa (PAN) patients without pathological findings appearing in color fundus photography (CFP), and to investigate the correlations with disease durations.
Methods: A total of 24 PAN patients who had been for 3 years or more and underwent SD-OCT were recruited from the UK Biobank, with exclusions for diabetes, eye disease, or abnormal CFP findings. Only the right eyes were included, with each PAN patient paired one-to-one with a control matched for age, sex, and ethnicity.

Despite advancements in high-resolution screening techniques, the identification of novel perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) remains challenging without prior structural information. In view of this, we proposed and implemented a new data-driven algorithm to calculate spectral similarity among PFAS, facilitating the generation of molecular networks to screen for unknown compounds. Using this approach, 81 PFAS across 12 distinct classes were identified in soil samples collected near an industrial park in Shandong Province, China, including the first reported occurrence of 12 iodine-substituted PFAS.

An unrevealed dihydroflavone-monoterpene conjugate (1), two unrevealed kavalactones (2-3, including one with an uncommon side chain), and thirteen previously identified compounds (4-16) were extracted from Alpinia katsumadai Hayata. seeds. The two-dimension structures of the new compounds were authenticated utilizing HRESIMS as well as NMR spectral analysis, while their absolute chiral configurations were ascertained either by correlating the experimental and simulated values of electronic circular dichroism (ECD) patterns or conducting X-ray diffraction experiments.

Monitoring the parameters and behavior of plankton makes it possible to assess the state of the aquatic ecosystem and detect the beginning of an environmental disaster at an early stage. In this respect, the most informative method for the in situ plankton study is underwater digital holography. This method allows obtaining information on the size, shape, and location of plankton individuals, as well as performing their classification and biotesting according to their behavioral responses using a submersible holographic camera non-invasively, in real time, and in the automatic mode.

This study aims to establish a rapid and non-destructive method for recognizing the origins and cultivation patterns of Astragali Radix. A hyperspectral imaging system(spectral ranges: 400-1 000 nm, 900-1 700 nm; detection time: 15 s) was used to examine the samples of Astragali Radix with different origins and cultivation patterns. The collected hyperspectral datasets were highly correlated and numerous, which required the establishment of stable and reliable dimension reduction and classification models.
