Purpose: In neuropathic postural tachycardia syndrome, peripheral sympathetic dysfunction leads to excessive venous blood pooling during orthostasis. Up to 84% of patients report leg pain and weakness in the upright position. To explore possible pathophysiological processes underlying these symptoms, the present study examined muscle excitability depending on body position in patients with neuropathic postural tachycardia syndrome and healthy subjects.

The dawn of the insulin era can be placed in 1921, when Banting and Best started their experiments which led, a year later, to the successful treatment of diabetes. They were preceded by the discoveries of the pancreatic cause of diabetes by Minkowski and von Mering in 1889 and of the islets by Paul Langerhans in 1869. The achievement of the first targeted treatment in medical history was a landmark of medical progress.

Belief in conspiracy theories-such as that the 9/11 terrorist attacks were an inside job or that the pharmaceutical industry deliberately spreads diseases-is a widespread and culturally universal phenomenon. [Jean Dominique Larrey and a paradoxical charity postage stamp].

A few years ago, the author had the lucky opportunity to acquire a charity stamp in an upright format showing the great French army surgeon Jean Dominique Larrey. This remarkable stamp, issued in 1964 for the benefit of the French Red Cross, is in itself a historical paradox which perhaps has not yet been noticed. In fact, it should have never been issued, since Larrey, to put it briefly, would have made the foundation of the Red Cross almost unnecessary: if Larrey's requirements concerning a prompt and extensive care of all wounded soldiers and persons involved in a battle had been put into practice only in Europe, there would have been no reason for an organization like the Red Cross.
