A mixture of sphingoid esters was isolated (1.4% w/w) from the molecular distillation of crude squid visceral oil. A preliminary investigation on the bioactivity profile and toxic potential of this residue was carried out by in vitro experiments. No cytotoxicity and a moderate lipase inhibition activity were highlighted.

Sphingoid base (SPH) is a basic structural unit of all classes of sphingolipids. A sphingoid base typically consists of an aliphatic chain that may be desaturated between C4 and C5, an amine group at C2, and a variable number of OH groups located at C1, C3, and C4. Variations in the chain length and the occurrence of chemical modifications, such as methyl branching, desaturation, and hydroxylation, lead to a large structural diversity and distinct functional properties of sphingoid bases.

Fumonisin B (FB) mycotoxin was intraperitoneally (IP) administered at the No Observed Adverse Effect Level (NOAEL = 0.2 mg/kg BW/day as IP equivalent, "L") and 5-times above ("H") to male rats, in a controlled ("C"), 5-day study (n = 10/group, total n = 30). Niemann-Pick type C (NPC) disease is a lysosomal storage disorder arising from mutations in the cholesterol-trafficking protein NPC1 (95%) or NPC2 (5%). These mutations result in accumulation of low-density lipoprotein-derived cholesterol in late endosomes/lysosomes, disruption of endocytic trafficking, and stalled autophagic flux. Additionally, NPC disease results in sphingolipid accumulation, yet it is unique among the sphingolipidoses because of the absence of mutations in the enzymes responsible for sphingolipid degradation.
