Background: Spectrophotometers are ubiquitous in chemical and biological science; however, their precision limits are under-appreciated. Rules-of-thumb and IUPAC referenced guidance restricting absorbance ranges to minimize uncertainty are based on historically important instruments which are no longer as widely used. Advances over the last half-century changed most "raw" data from absorbance and transmittance values directly produced in analog electronics to digitized intensities.

Documenting newly invasive species and understanding how they reach into new territories, establish populations, and interact with other species remain vitally important. Here, we report on the invasion of the South American leafhopper, into Africa, where it has established populations in Ghana, encroaching inland at least 350 km off the coast.

Although substantial advances in predicting the ecological impacts of global change have been made, predictions of the evolutionary impacts have lagged behind. In soil ecosystems, microbes act as the primary energetic drivers of carbon cycling; however, microbes are also capable of evolving on timescales comparable to rates of global change. Given the importance of soil ecosystems in global carbon cycling, we assess the potential impact of microbial evolution on carbon-climate feedbacks in this system.

Quality control (QC) is a necessary, but often an under-appreciated, part of FMRI processing. Here we describe procedures for performing QC on acquired or publicly available FMRI datasets using the widely used AFNI software package. This work is part of the Research Topic, "Demonstrating Quality Control (QC) Procedures in fMRI.

This study aimed to assess the economic impact of instrument tray optimization in total joint arthroplasty.
Methods: Thirty-five randomly selected elective primary total knee arthroplasty and total hip arthroplasty performed by 4 fellowship-trained surgeons were analyzed.
