Purpose: Spine deformity surgery is a complex multi-step procedure that has a relatively high complication rate. The use of surgical safety checklists has been shown to reduce perioperative adverse events, but existing lists are varied and non-specific for spinal deformity surgery. Thus, the purpose of this study was to develop a comprehensive surgical checklist for complex spinal corrective surgery.

Background: Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is the most common chronic rheumatic condition of childhood. Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is among the most commonly affected joints in JIA patients. When JIA involves the TMJ, it may affect condylar growth in the joint; therefore, JIA patients are at risk of unfavourable long-term outcomes from associated joint damage.

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a complex synovial joint shrouded in mystery, as the etiology of many TMJ disorders are unsolved. Idiopathic/progressive condylar resorption (ICR/PCR) is one such TMJ disorder characterized by a gradually deteriorating mandibular condylar mass, resulting in severe mandibular retrognathia, which often accompanied by clockwise rotation of mandible and an anterior open bite. Since the etiology of the ICR/PCR remains unclear, no definitive prevention or management options have been established.

In children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) can be involved. To prevent TMJ damage due to inflammation, early recognition is important, for which contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the gold standard. In this study, the interobserver reliability and construct validity of the Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis Magnetic Resonance Scoring System for Temporomandibular Joints (JAMRIS-TMJ) was assessed.
