Background/aims: As a major complication after thoracic radiotherapy, radiation-induced lung injury (RILI) has great impact on long term quality of life and could result in fatal respiratory insufficiency The present study was aimed to evaluate the effects of Myrtol standardized on RILI, and to investigate the underlying mechanism.

Methods: A mouse model of radiation-induced lung injury was generated by using thoracic irradiation with a single dose of 16Gy. Mice were orally administrated with Myrtol (25 mg/kg/day) for 4 weeks after irradiation, while prednisone (5 mg/kg/day) was used as a positive control. After then, the body weight and lung coefficient were calculated. The severity of fibrosis was evaluated by observing pulmonary sections after radiation and collagen content in lung tissues was calculated following the hydroxyproline (HYP) assay. Pathological changes were observed in all the groups by using HE staining and Masson staining. The serum levels of TGF-β1, TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, and PGE2 were also measured with an ELISA assay. Western blot assay was used to measure the impact of Myrtol on AKT and its downstream signaling pathway, including MMP-2 and MMP-9. The levels of Vimentin and α-SMA were evaluated with an immunofluorescence assay.

Results: Treatment with Myrtol standardized, but not prednisone, reduced lung coefficient and collagen deposition in lung tissues, while attenuated histological damages induced by irradiation. Myrtol standardized also reduced the production of MDA, while increased the level of SOD. It was also observed that Myrtol standardized inhibited TGF-β1 and a series of pro-inflammatory cytokines including TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, PGE2. While in prednisone group, even though the early pneumonitis was ameliorated, the collagen disposition remained unchanged in latter times. Immunofluorescence analysis also revealed elevation of vimentin and α-SMA in the alveoli after a single dose of 16Gy.

Conclusion: The present results suggest Myrtol standardized as an effective agent for attenuating the lung injury induced by irradiation.

Background: Unresectable appendiceal mucinous neoplasms (AMNs) with extensive peritoneal dissemination cause significant morbidity and have limited treatment options. We evaluated a novel combination of Celecoxib and Myrtol in treating such AMNs.

Methods: Patients with recurrent AMNs with extensive peritoneal disease treated with a daily regimen of 200 mg Celecoxib and 1200 mg Myrtol Standardized were included.

Tubomanometry value as an associated factor for medication outcomes in adult acute otitis media with effusion.

Eur Arch Otorhinolaryngol

January 2018

Department of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery, Peking University First Hospital, 8# Xishiku Street, Western District, Beijing, 100034, China.

Tubomanometry (TMM) is a relatively novel method for testing the eustachian tube (ET) function, which is speculated to be closely related to otitis media with effusion (OME). The purpose of this study is to explore the predictive power of TMM value for medication outcomes in adult acute OME. A cohort of 41 adult acute OME patients with 53 affected ears was studied retrospectively.

GeloMyrtol and GeloMyrtol forte, also known as Myrtol standardized, is an herbal medical product (phytomedicine) obtained by a multistep distillation procedure from essential oils. The major biological marker of and activity of Myrtol standardized is the monoterpenes, d-limonene, 1,8-cineole, and alpha-pinene. Myrtol standardized is estimated to have antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial potential while many studies confirmed its secretolytic and bronchospasmolytic effects.

Myrtol standardized affects mucociliary clearance.

Int Forum Allergy Rhinol

March 2017

Department of Otolaryngology, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore, Singapore.

Background: Myrtol standardized (Gelomyrtol forte) has been shown to be effective in controlling nasal symptoms of rhinosinusitis by promoting mucociliary clearance. Our aim was to evaluate the short- and long-term effects of myrtol on ciliated columnar cells and goblet cells in an in-vitro setting.

Methods: Nasal epithelial cells were harvested (42 days) from an air-liquid interface (ALI) culture of human nasal epithelial stem/progenitor cells (hNESPCs), which was derived from biopsies of nasal inferior turbinate mucosa.

Background: According to prescribing information for Myrtol standardized enteric-coated soft capsules, the medicine should be taken on an empty stomach. Some patients may experience stomach discomfort after oral administration in fasted state and would prefer to take the medicine after a meal. However, there is no literature addressing the effect of meal on absorption of this drug; therefore, it is desirable to explore the feasibility of taking the capsule after a meal from pharmacokinetic perspective.
