On account of in situ cross-linked reaction of epoxy SU-8 with poly(4-vinylpyridine) (P4VP) and its strong reactive bonding ability with different pretreated substrates, we developed a simple universal one-step solution-based coating method for fast surface modification of various objects. Through this method, a layer of P4VP molecules with controllable thickness can be tethered tightly onto substrates with the assistance of SU-8. P4VP molecules possess a lot of pyridine ligands to immobilize transitional metal ions that can behave as the catalyst of electroless copper plating for surface metallization while functioning as the adhesion-promoting layer between the substrate and deposited metal. Attributed to interpenetrated entanglement of P4VP molecules and as-deposited metal, ultrathick (>7 μm) strongly adhesive high-quality copper layer can be formed on flexible substrates without any delamination. Then through laser printer to print toner mask, a variety of designed circuits can be easily fabricated on modified flexible PET substrate.

The linear diblock copolymer polystyrene--poly(4-vinylpyridine) (PS-P4VP) is an important copolymer recently used in many applications such as optoelectronics, sensors, catalysis, membranes, energy conversion, energy storage devices, photolithography, and biomedical applications. (1) Background: The surface thermodynamic properties of PS-P4VP copolymers are of great importance in many chemical and industrial processes. (2) Methods: The inverse gas chromatography (IGC) at infinite dilution was used for the experimental determination of the retention volumes of organic solvents adsorbed on copolymer surfaces as a function of temperature.

A bioinspired polymeric membrane capable of shifting the selectivity of a copper oxide electrocatalyst in the CO reduction reaction is described. The membrane is deposited on top of copper oxide thin films from wet deposition techniques under controlled conditions of humidity and self-assembles into an arranged network of micrometer-sized pores throughout the polymer cross-section. The membrane was composed of a block copolymer with a precisely controlled ratio of poly-4-vinylpyridine and poly(methyl methacrylate) blocks (PMMA--P4VP).

Polymer particles capable of dynamic shape changes in response to light have received substantial attention in the development of intelligent multifunctional materials. In this study, we develop a light-responsive block copolymer (BCP) particle system that exhibits fast and reversible shape and color transitions. The key molecular design is the integration of spiropyran photoacid (SPPA) molecules into the BCP particle system, which enables fast and dynamic transformations of polystyrene--poly(4-vinylpyridine) (PS--P4VP) particles in response to light.

High Refractive Index Polymer Thin Films by Charge-Transfer Complexation.

Department of Chemical Engineering, University of Rochester, Rochester, New York 14627, United States.

High refractive index polymers are essential in next-generation flexible optical and optoelectronic devices. This paper describes a simple synthetic method to prepare polymeric optical coatings possessing high refractive indexes. Poly(4-vinylpyridine) (P4VP) thin films prepared using initiated chemical vapor deposition are exposed to highly polarizable halogen molecules to form stable charge-transfer complexes: P4VP-IX (X = I, Br, and Cl).

In this work, we use density functional theory (DFT) calculated competitive hydrogen bonds and dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) simulated micellar structural information to uncover the CO-expanded liquid (CXL)-aided self-assembled structure and emission mechanisms of the self-assembled fluorescent composites (SAFCs). Herein, the SAFCs are formed through the self assembly between diblock copolymer polystyrene--poly(4-vinylpyridine) (PS--P4VP) blend and the dye molecule 4-(9-(2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)ethynyl)-7,10-diphenylfluoranthen-8-yl)phenol (4) in CO-expanded toluene at 313.2 K and varied pressures.
