Poly(propylene-co-1-heptene) copolymers have been evaluated in a wide 1-heptene content range. Two different polymorphs can be observed in this interval under the processing conditions imposed: monoclinic crystallites and mesomorphic entities. The unique presence of one or the other lattice at specific content or the coexistence of both of them at the intermediate composition interval is a key factor affecting some of the exhibited properties. The influence is observed in characteristics mainly dependent on either crystalline structure, like rigidity, or the amorphous regions, as location and intensity of glass transition. To get a deeper understanding, the transition from mesophase to monoclinic crystallites has also been studied by DSC and by WAXS and SAXS experiments using synchrotron radiation. It is observed that this transformation is only partial and just involves one-third of the initial ordered mesomorphic entities. Permeability to different gases is mainly dependent on amorphous content and hindrance that monoclinic or mesomorphic entities impose on those disordered regions.

A Highly Versatile Polymer Network Based on Liquid Crystalline Dendrimers.

Int J Mol Sci

May 2021

Instituto de Nanociencia y Materiales de Aragón (INMA), CSIC-Universidad de Zaragoza, Pedro Cerbuna 12, 50009 Zaragoza, Spain.

Highly functional macromolecules with a well-defined architecture are the key to designing efficient and smart materials, and these polymeric systems can be tailored for specific applications in a diverse range of fields. Herein, the formation of a new liquid crystalline polymeric network based on the crosslinking of dendrimeric entities by the Cu-catalyzed variant of the Huisgen 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of azides and alkynes to afford 1,2,3-triazoles is reported. The polymeric material obtained in this way is easy to process and exhibits a variety of properties, which include mesomorphism, viscoelastic behavior, and thermal contraction.

2,4-Diamino-6-phenyl-1,3,5-triazines grafted with one or two semiperfluorinated chains at the phenyl substituent have been investigated in binary mixtures with one-chain and two-chain oligo(dimethylsiloxy) terminated 4-alkoxy- and 3,4-dialkoxybenzoic acids. Equimolar mixtures of the triazines with the complementary acids form discrete double hydrogen-bonded heterodimers with an elongated central core. Mesomorphic properties are observed only if at least two terminal fluoroalkyl chains are attached to the triazine entity.

Silver-pyrazole complexes as hybrid multifunctional materials with metallomesogenic and photoluminescent behaviour.

Dalton Trans

February 2013

Departamento de Química Inorgánica I, Facultad de Ciencias Químicas, Universidad Complutense, 28040 Madrid, Spain.

New pyridine-functionalised pyrazole compounds [Hpz(R(n)py)] (R(n) = C(6)H(4)OC(n)H(2n+1); n = 12, 14, 16, 18; 1-4) and their corresponding silver complexes [Ag(Hpz(R(n)py))(2)][A] ([A] = NO(3)(-), BF(4)(-); ) have been synthesised and characterised. All of them, with the exception of 1, are liquid crystal materials exhibiting monotropic or enantiotropic SmA mesophases, in contrast to the non-mesomorphic related R(n)-monosubstituted compounds. Because the molecular shape is a factor determinant in the organisation of molecules in the liquid crystal phase, we were interested in solving the crystal structure of representative examples of the mentioned compounds, such as 1 and 6.
