Background: Placebo effects emerging from expectancies of relatives, also known as placebo by proxy, is a rather unexplored field. In this study, we assume a correlation between parental anxiety/expectancy and postoperative morbidities in children. Accordingly, a reduction of parental anxiety is expected to enhance the effect of treatment.
Methods: From October 2012 to June 2013, parents of 282 children completed a self-report closed-ended questionnaire embedded in a main RCT at three ambulatory care centers.
Results: There were no significant associations between parental expectancy or anxiety and children experiencing vomiting and pain.
Conclusion: The present study is the first to investigate placebo by proxy in acupuncture treatment for children. The findings were not able to demonstrate any placebo effect by proxy. Unknown confounders and limitations of methods may have contributed to the negative findings. Thus, the findings must be read with precaution, as the possibility of a type II error cannot be excluded.
Trial Registration: ClinicalTrials.gov NCT01729052.

Rotavirus vaccine appears to perform sub-optimally in countries with higher rotavirus burden. We hypothesized that differences in the magnitude of rotavirus exposures may bias vaccine efficacy (VE) estimates, so true differences in country-specific rotavirus VE would be exaggerated without accommodating differences in exposure. We estimated VE against any-severity and severe rotavirus gastroenteritis (RVGE) using Poisson regression models fit to pooled individual-level data from Phase II and III monovalent rotavirus vaccine trials conducted between 2000 and 2012.

Reducing pension insurance rates is an important measure for lowering the burden on enterprises. Does this measure encourage enterprises to invest in innovation? This study uses provincial panel data of China during 2000-2017 to analyze the reduction in the proportion of enterprise contributions to pension insurance in Zhejiang and Shandong provinces as a quasi-natural experiment. Specifically, it uses the synthetic control method to construct a counterfactual state of the treatment group, and analyzes the effect of fee reduction policy on enterprise innovation input.

Background: The robustness and persistence of vaccine antigen-induced antibodies are often used as proxy indicators of vaccine efficacy, but immune responses to vaccine vectors are typically less well-defined. Our study considered the kinetics of immunoglobulin (IgG) responses against the vector (vesicular stomatitis Indiana virus [VSIV]) nucleoprotein (N) and the inserted antigen (Ebola virus [EBOV]) glycoprotein (GP1,2) components of the rVSVΔG-ZEBOV-GP (rVSV-ZEBOV) vaccine and evaluated their use as biomarkers to confirm self-reported vaccination status.
Methods: From the Partnership for Research on Ebola Virus in Liberia (PREVAIL) I clinical trial (NCT02344407), we randomly selected 212 participants who received rVSV-ZEBOV (n=107) or placebo (n=105).

Evidence suggests a worse clinical course in women compared to men with bipolar disorder. However, little research has explored gender differences in the efficacy of anti-manic medication. We sought to determine whether there are gender differences in efficacy of drug treatment in acute manic episodes of bipolar I disorder, and the influence of dichotomized age as a proxy for menopausal status and baseline severity on gender differences.
