The adult mammalian brain is remarkably plastic and constantly undergoes structurofunctional modifications in response to environmental stimuli. In many regions plasticity is manifested by modifications in the efficacy of existing synaptic connections or synapse formation and elimination. In a few regions, however, plasticity is brought by the addition of new neurons that integrate into established neuronal networks. This type of neuronal plasticity is particularly prominent in the olfactory bulb (OB) where thousands of neuronal progenitors are produced on a daily basis in the subventricular zone (SVZ) and migrate along the rostral migratory stream (RMS) towards the OB. In the OB, these neuronal precursors differentiate into local interneurons, mature, and functionally integrate into the bulbar network by establishing output synapses with principal neurons. Despite continuous progress, it is still not well understood how normal functioning of the OB is preserved in the constantly remodelling bulbar network and what role adult-born neurons play in odor behaviour. In this review we will discuss different levels of morphofunctional plasticity effected by adult-born neurons and their functional role in the adult OB and also highlight the possibility that different subpopulations of adult-born cells may fulfill distinct functions in the OB neuronal network and odor behaviour.

In many taxa, increasing attention is being paid to how group living shapes the expression of brain plasticity and behavioural flexibility. In eusocial insects, the lifelong commitment of workers and queens to a reproductive or non-reproductive caste is accompanied by a loss of behavioural totipotency, and often, by the expression of a limited behavioural repertoire in workers due to their specialisation. On the other hand, individuals of solitary species have a broader behavioural repertoire as they have to perform all the tasks themselves.

Aberrant adult hippocampal neurogenesis is implicated in neurological and mood disorders associated with dysregulation of the mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR). Understanding how the mTOR pathway shapes the functional development of different subpopulations of adult-born hippocampal neural stem cells will enable insight into potential therapeutic pathways for these disorders. Here we study how loss of TSC2, a regulator of mTOR pathway and a causal gene for tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC), affects dentate gyrus granule cell morphogenesis and hippocampal-dependent function.

Prior work has demonstrated that there are differences in the activation of granule neurons in the supra and infrapyramidal blades of the DG during a range of hippocampal dependent tasks. Here we used an automated touch screen pattern separation task combined to temporally controlled tagging of active neurons to determine how performance in a cognitively demanding task affected patterns of neural activity in the DG.

Neurogenesis occurs in the adult brain in the hippocampal dentate gyrus, an area that contains neurons which are vulnerable to insults and injury, such as severe seizures. Previous studies showed that increasing adult neurogenesis reduced neuronal damage after these seizures. Because the damage typically is followed by chronic life-long seizures (epilepsy), we asked if increasing adult-born neurons would prevent epilepsy.

Enriched environment (EE), characterized by multi-sensory stimulation, represents a non-invasive alternative for alleviating epileptic seizures. However, the mechanism by which EE exerts its therapeutic impact remains incompletely understood. Here, it is elucidated that EE mitigates seizure susceptibility through the augmentation of adult neurogenesis within the entorhinal cortex (EC) circuit.
