Context: Pomegranate (Punica granatum L., Punicaceae) is known to possess enormous antioxidant activity.

Objective: This study investigates the protective effects of pomegranate peel against barium-mediated renal damage.

Materials And Methods: Rats were exposed during 21 days either to barium (67 ppm), barium + pomegranate peel (5% of diet) or to only pomegranate peel (5% of diet).

Results: Exposure rats to barium provoked a significant increase in kidney malondialdehyde (MDA), advanced oxidation protein products (AOPP) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) levels. Creatinine, urea and uric acid levels in plasma and urine were also modified. Superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activities, non protein thiol (NPSH) and reduced glutathione (GSH) levels were decreased. Metallothionein (MT) production was increased and their genes expressions were up-regulated. All these changes were improved by dietary pomegranate peel. Moreover, the distorted histoarchitecture in kidney of barium group was alleviated by pomegranate peel.

Conclusion: Our data showed, for the first time, the protective effects of pomegranate peel against barium-induced renal oxidative damage.

Encapsulation of walnut husk and pomegranate peel extracts by alginate and chitosan-coated nanoemulsions.

Int J Biol Macromol

January 2025

Department of Food and Agricultural Products, Food Technology and Agricultural Products Research Center, Standard Research Institute (SRI), PO Box 31745-139, Karaj, Iran.

Walnut husk extract (WHE) and pomegranate peel extract (PPE) were produced through ultrasound-assisted extraction. Total phenol, flavonoid and tannin contents (TPC, TFC and TTC), antioxidant and antimicrobial activities were determined. The best extracts were used for production of alginate (Alg) and chitosan (CS)-coated nanoemulsions containing WHE (NWHE) or PPE (NPPE).

Agricultural food waste and by-products could provide high-value compounds that positively affect human and environmental health, thus representing promising ingredients for cosmeceutical products. This study explores the biological activities of tomato skin (HP) and pomegranate peel (PPE) extracts on oral mucosa to evaluate their possible use in mouthwashes. The biological activities of the extracts and the mouthwash (MW) containing them were evaluated in Human Primary Gingival Epithelial cells (HGECs).

Pomegranate peel powder is used as a functional ingredient in the development of nutritional bars. Pomegranate (Punica granatum) is well known fruit belongs to punicaceae family having multiple health benefits, not only limited to its edible parts but also in its non-edible parts mostly the peel. Fruit wastes are rich source of nutrients, and can be used for the development of functional food products.

The objective of this research is to develop a natural macromolecules-based smart double-layer film using carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) film containing pomegranate peel anthocyanins (PPA) and cellulose acetate nanofibers (CANFs) with Artemisia sieberi Besser essential oil-loaded nanostructured lipid carriers (ABNLCs). Based on the performance as a color indicator, and other studied properties, the CMC/PPA 8 % film was selected as the optimized film. The double-layer film was constructed by electrospinning the CANFs containing ABNLCs on the optimized CMC film.
