Published: December 2015

In the present paper, we have utilized the concept of photonic crystals for the implementation of an optical NOT gate inverter. The designed structure has a hexagonal arrangement of silicon rods in air substrate. The logic function is based on the phenomenon of the existence of the photonic bandgap and resulting guided modes in defect photonic crystal waveguides. We have plotted the transmission, extinction ratio, and tolerance analysis graphs for the structure, and it has been observed that the maximum output is obtained for a telecom wavelength of 1.554 μm. Dispersion curves are obtained using the plane wave expansion method, and the transmission is simulated using the finite element method. The proposed structure is applicable for photonic integrated circuits due to its simple structure and clear operating principle.

Blue phase (BP) liquid crystals (LC) have lately become the focus of extensive research due to their peculiar properties and structure. BPs exhibit a highly organized 3D structure with a lattice period in the hundreds of nm. Owing to such structure, BPs are regarded as 3D photonic crystals.

Photonic crystal based designs of 3-bit even parity checker and generator circuits are proposed in this paper. These circuits are realized for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, on a photonic crystal platform with the aim of achieving power efficient, simple, and compact devices suitable for photonic integrated circuits. The proposed structures are realized using all-optical reconfigurable XOR/NOT gates with compact dimensions, low power consumption, and high contrast ratios.

Optical sensing devices has a great potential in both industrial and biomedical applications for the detection of biochemicals, toxic substances or hazardous gases thanks to their sustainability and high-selectivity characteristics. Among different kinds of optical sensors based on such as fibers, surface plasmons and resonators; photonic crystal (PC) based optical sensors enable the realization of more compact and highly efficient on-chip sensing platforms due to their intriguing dispersive relations. Interferometric devices based on PCs render possible the creation of biochemical sensors with high sensitivity since a slight change of sensor path length caused by the captured biochemicals could be detected at the output of the interferometer via the interferences of separated beams.

In this paper, we aim to design a compact structure that can work both as an optical adder and subtractor. Also, as far as we know, one of the main disadvantages of previous optical adders or subtractors is that, inside a single structure, the levels of optical intensity for logic 1 at different output ports are different. In this work, we aim to solve this issue, too.

Using optical beam interference inside photonic-crystal-based waveguides is a promising method for designing and realizing all-optical logic gates and other digital devices. In this paper we design and propose an all-optical 1-bit comparator using optical beam interference. In the proposed structure, the logic states of input ports are determined based on their initial phases.
