Electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) was tested for its use in monitoring spent nuclear fuel (SNF) constituents including U, Pu, dibutyl phosphate (DBP), and tributyl phosphate (TBP). Both positive and negative ion modes were used to evaluate the speciation of U and Pu with TBP and DBP. Furthermore, apparent stability constants were determined for U complexed to TBP and DBP. In positive ion mode, TBP produced a strong signal with and without complexation to U or Pu, but, in negative ion mode, no TBP, U-TBP, or Pu-TBP complexes were observed. Apparent stability constants were determined for [UO2(NO3)2(TBP)2], [UO2(NO3)2(H2O)(TBP)2], and [UO2(NO3)2(TBP)3]. In contrast DBP, U-DBP, and Pu-DBP complexes were observed in both positive and negative ion modes. Apparent stability constants were determined for the species [UO2(DBP)], [UO2(DBP)3], and [UO2(DBP)4]. Analyzing mixtures of U or Pu with TBP and DBP yielded the formation of ternary complexes whose stoichiometry was directly related to the ratio of TBP to DBP. The ESI-MS protocols used in this study will further demonstrate the utility of ESI-MS and its applicability to process control monitoring in SNF reprocessing facilities.

Tributyl phosphate (TBP), an organophosphate ester (OPE), is heavily used as a solvent in chemical industries, a plasticizer, and to extract radioactive molecules. Thus, widespread uses of TBP in industrialized countries led to the release of TBP and its metabolites, dibutyl phosphate (DBP) and monobutyl phosphate (MBP), in the environment and were detected in human samples. Accumulating these OPEs over time in humans and aquatic animals may develop toxicological effects.

Background: Organic phosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) and phthalate acid esters (PAEs) are common endocrine-disrupting chemicals that cause metabolic disorders. This study aimed to assess the association between joint exposure to OPFRs and PAEs during early pregnancy in women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM).
Methods: Seven OPFRs and five PAEs were detected in the urine of 65 GDM patients and 100 controls using gas chromatography-tandem triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (GC-MS).
The European Commission asked EFSA to update its 2012 risk assessment on brominated phenols and their derivatives in food, focusing on five bromophenols and one derivative: 2,4,6-tribromophenol (), 2,4-dibromophenol (), 4-bromophenol (), 2,6-dibromophenol (), tetrabrominated bisphenol S (), tetrabromobisphenol S bismethyl ether (). Based on the overall evidence, the CONTAM Panel considered in vivo genotoxicity of to be unlikely. Effects in liver and kidney were considered as the critical effects of 2,4,6-tribromophenol () in studies in rats.

The effects of simulated radiolytic degradation of tri-butyl phosphate (TBP) on the chemical speciation of cerium were studied by spectrophotometry and electrochemistry of TBP solutions containing increasing amounts of di--butyl phosphoric acid (HDBP), a common degradation product of TBP. Tetravalent cerium was found to exchange coordinated nitrate for the dibutyl phosphate anion, forming dinuclear complexes of the formula (CeOCe)(NO)(DBP)·3TBP ( = 0-3). Compared to Ce(IV), Ce(III) was complexed less strongly by HDBP in TBP, but HDBP displaced both nitrate and TBP to form the series of mononuclear complexes Ce(NO)(HDBP·DBP)·(3-)TBP ( = 0-3).

Bromophenols has been proven to synthesize hydroxylated polybrominated diphenyl ethers (OH-PBDEs), which may pose additional environmental and health risks in the process of bioremediation. In this study, the removal of 2,4-dibromophenol (2,4-DBP) and 2,4,6-tribromophenol (2,4,6-TBP) and the biosynthetic of OH-PBDEs by Prorocentrum donghaiense were explored. The removal efficiencies of 2,4-DBP and 2,4,6-TBP ranged from 32.
