Article Abstract

An overview on the development of wet-chemically synthesized semiconductor nanostructures as optical gain materials is presented in this Review, beginning with the first demonstration of amplified spontaneous emission in zero-dimensional quantum dots and evolving to more sophisticated heterostructures such as one-dimensional core-seeded nanorods, branched core-seeded tetrapods and two-dimensional nanoplatelets. The advantages and challenges of utilizing strongly quantum-confined colloidal semiconductor materials as gain media are discussed, and a concerted effort is made to elaborate on how the progression towards more structurally complex architectures has allowed for dramatic improvements in performance and stability over the archetypal quantum dot.

Background: Craniofacial bone regeneration represents a dynamic area within tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Central to this field, is the continual exploration of new methodologies for template fabrication, leveraging established bio ceramic materials, with the objective of restoring bone integrity and facilitating successful implant placements.

Methods: Photopolymerized templates were prepared using three distinct bio ceramic materials, specifically a wet chemically synthesized bioactive glass and two commercially sourced hydroxyapatite variants.

The attachment of thiolated molecules onto gold surfaces is one of the most extensively used and robust ligand exchange approaches to exploit the nanooptical features of nanoscale and nanostructured plasmonic materials. In this work, the impact of thiol adsorption on the optical properties of wet-chemically synthesized gold nanoprisms is studied both at the ensemble and single particle level to investigate the build-up of more complex ligand layers. Two prototypical ligands with different lengths have been investigated ((16-mercaptohexadecyl)trimethylammonium bromide - MTAB and thiolated polyethylene glycol - mPEG-SH).

High-quality devices based on layered heterostructures are typically built from materials obtained by complex solid-state physical approaches or laborious mechanical exfoliation and transfer. Meanwhile, wet-chemically synthesized materials commonly suffer from surface residuals and intrinsic defects. Here, we synthesize using an unprecedented colloidal photocatalyzed, one-pot redox reaction a few-layers bismuth hybrid of "electronic grade" structural quality.

While some promising materials for all-solid-state batteries are already extensively investigated in a lab scale, the transferability to mass production is still a limiting factor. β-lithium thiophosphate (β-LiPS) has good ionic conductivity and can be synthesized wet-chemically, which opens up the possibility for scale-up. For safe upscaling, the enthalpies of the synthesis steps need to be examined in order to handle exothermic and endothermic processes.

Exploiting an affordable, durable, and high-performance electrocatalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) under lower pH condition (acidic) is highly challengeable and much attractive toward the hydrogen-based energy technologies. A spinel CoCrO is observed as a potential noble-metal-free candidate for OER in alkaline medium. The presence of Cr further leads to electronic structure modulation of CoO and thereby greatly increases the corrosive resistance toward OER in acidic environment.
