Extensive research highlights the pivotal role of signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) in promoting hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) progression. Different diseases may arise from the dysregulation of non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs), which regulation is necessary for maintaining cellular homeostasis. ncRNAs are regulated by transcriptional, post-transcriptional, translational and post-translational processes. Post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression is carried out by microRNAs (miRNAs), a class of small ncRNA molecules, which can identify their target sites by a brief nucleotide sequence, known as the miRNA response element (MRE), present on the miRNA seed sequence and the target transcript.

The epithelial sodium channel (ENaC) plays a key role in osmoregulation in tetrapod vertebrates and is a candidate receptor for salt taste sensation. There are four ENaC subunits (α, β, γ, δ) which form αβγ- or δβγ ENaCs. While αβγ-ENaC is a 'maintenance protein' controlling sodium and potassium homeostasis, δβγ-ENaC might represent a 'stress protein' monitoring high sodium concentrations.

Toxin-antidote elements (TAs) are selfish DNA sequences that bias their transmission to the next generation. TAs typically consist of two linked genes: a toxin and an antidote. The toxin kills progeny that do not inherit the TA, while the antidote counteracts the toxin in progeny that inherit the TA.
