The inter-kingdom communication between host and pathogenic bacteria mediated by the host hormones epinephrine (Epi)/norepinephrine (NE)/autoinducer-3 (AI-3) and transduced by the bacterial two-component signal transduction system QseBC has been well demonstrated in mammalian pathogens. Aeromonas hydrophila, a common opportunistic pathogen in freshwater aquaculture, responds to NE by increased bacterial growth and enhanced virulence. However, the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood.

The Gram-negative anaerobe Fusobacterium nucleatum is a major producer of hydrogen sulfide (HS), a volatile sulfur compound that causes halitosis. Here, we dissected the genetic determinants of HS production and its role in bacterial fitness and virulence in this important member of the oral microbiome. F.

The whooping cough agent, , secretes an adenylate cyclase toxin-hemolysin (CyaA, ACT, or AC-Hly) that catalyzes the conversion of intracellular ATP to cAMP and through its signaling annihilates the bactericidal activities of host sentinel phagocytes. In parallel, CyaA permeabilizes host cells by the formation of cation-selective membrane pores that account for the hemolytic activity of CyaA. The pore-forming activity contributes to the overall cytotoxic effect of CyaA in vitro, and it has previously been proposed to synergize with the cAMP-elevating activity in conferring full virulence on in the mouse model of pneumonic infection.

is a Gram-positive bacterium causing listeriosis in animals and humans. To initiate a foodborne infection, has to pass through the host gastrointestinal tract (GIT). In this study, we evaluated survival abilities of 10403S wild type (WT) and its isogenic mutants in alternative sigma (σ) factor genes (i.

The study aims to investigate the characteristic baseline information about genetic lineages, drug-resistance genes, virulence genes and evolutionary relationships of food-borne Listeria monocytogenes (Lm) isolates from Nanshan district of Shenzhen. The whole genomes of 46 Lm isolates during 2009-2019 were extracted and sequenced (Illumina PE-150, 100×). The CLC Genomics Workbench 12.
