Mechanism design for a fair and equitable approach to global vaccine distribution: The case of COVID-19.

PLOS Glob Public Health

December 2023

Division of Sustainable Development, College of Science and Engineering, Qatar Foundation, Hamad Bin Khalifa University, Doha, Qatar.

Vaccines are one of the most effective tools humanity has in the fight against pandemics. One of the major challenges of vaccine distribution is achieving fair and equitable allocation across the countries of the world, regardless of their economic wealth. The self-interested behaviour of high-income countries and the underutilisation of vaccines allocated to underprepared countries are some of the failures reported during COVID-19 vaccine roll-out.

Whole slide image representation in bone marrow cytology.

Comput Biol Med

November 2023

McMaster University, Hamilton, Canada; William Osler Health System, Brampton, Canada. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on using AI to create compact representations of whole slide images (WSIs) in bone marrow aspirate cytology, which is essential for hematology diagnosis.
  • Traditional visual inspection of these specimens is complex and varies among experts, making the development of AI tools beneficial for clinical decision-making.
  • The authors applied an AI system to classify and count cells, achieving better performance in image retrieval and diagnostic prediction compared to random guessing, showcasing the potential of deep learning in improving diagnostics in hematology.

Learning binary and sparse permutation-invariant representations for fast and memory efficient whole slide image search.

Comput Biol Med

August 2023

Kimia Lab, University of Waterloo, Waterloo, ON, Canada; Rhazes Lab, Artificial Intelligence & Informatics, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN, USA. Electronic address:

Considering their gigapixel sizes, the representation of whole slide images (WSIs) for classification and retrieval systems is a non-trivial task. Patch processing and multi-Instance Learning (MIL) are common approaches to analyze WSIs. However, in end-to-end training, these methods require high GPU memory consumption due to the simultaneous processing of multiple sets of patches.
