The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve is a popular technique with applications, for example, investigating an accuracy of a biomarker to delineate between disease and non-disease groups. A common measure of accuracy of a given diagnostic marker is the area under the ROC curve (AUC). In contrast with the AUC, the partial area under the ROC curve (pAUC) looks into the area with certain specificities (i.e., true negative rate) only, and it can be often clinically more relevant than examining the entire ROC curve. The pAUC is commonly estimated based on a U-statistic with the plug-in sample quantile, making the estimator a non-traditional U-statistic. In this article, we propose an accurate and easy method to obtain the variance of the nonparametric pAUC estimator. The proposed method is easy to implement for both one biomarker test and the comparison of two correlated biomarkers because it simply adapts the existing variance estimator of U-statistics. In this article, we show accuracy and other advantages of the proposed variance estimation method by broadly comparing it with previously existing methods. Further, we develop an empirical likelihood inference method based on the proposed variance estimator through a simple implementation. In an application, we demonstrate that, depending on the inferences by either the AUC or pAUC, we can make a different decision on a prognostic ability of a same set of biomarkers. Hunan Key Laboratory of Biomedical Nanomaterials and Devices, Hunan University of Technology, No. 88 West Taishan Road, Zhuzhou 412007, Hunan, China.

Aims: The electrocardiogram (ECG) is the primary method for diagnosing atrial fibrillation (AF), but interpreting ECGs can be time-consuming and labour-intensive, which deserves more exploration.

Methods And Results: We collected ECG data from 6590 patients as YY2023, classified as Normal, AF, and Other. Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (BiLSTM), and Attention construct the AF recognition model CNN BiLSTM Attention-Atrial Fibrillation (CLA-AF).

Diagnostic accuracy of -specific triple-color FluoroSpot assay in differentiating tuberculosis infection status in febrile patients with suspected tuberculosis.

Front Immunol

January 2025

Division of Infectious Diseases, Department of Internal Medicine, State Key Laboratory of Complex Severe and Rare Disease, Peking Union Medical College Hospital, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and Peking Union Medical College, Beijing, China.

Objective: This study aims to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of a (MTB)-specific triple-color FluoroSpot assay (IFN-γ/IL-2/TNF-α) in the differentiation of tuberculosis (TB) infection status in febrile patients.

Method: Febrile patients with suspected active TB (ATB) were consecutively enrolled. The frequencies and proportions of MTB-specific T cells secreting IFN-γ, IL-2, and TNF-α were detected at the single-cell level by triple-color FluoroSpot assay.

Exploring the shared mechanism of fatigue between systemic lupus erythematosus and myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome: monocytic dysregulation and drug repurposing.

Front Immunol

January 2025

Key Laboratory of Chinese Medicine Rheumatology of Zhejiang Province, Research Institute of Chinese Medical Clinical Foundation and Immunology, College of Basic Medical Science, Zhejiang Chinese Medical University, Hangzhou, China.

Background: SLE and ME/CFS both present significant fatigue and share immune dysregulation. The mechanisms underlying fatigue in these disorders remain unclear, and there are no standardized treatments. This study aims to explore shared mechanisms and predict potential therapeutic drugs for fatigue in SLE and ME/CFS.

Objective: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a major cause of atherosclerosis, as well as an independent risk factor of cardiovascular adverse events. We aimed to evaluate the association of serum Meteorin-like protein (Metrnl) level with carotid atherosclerosis as determined by carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) status in subjects with T2DM.

Methods: This cross-sectional study included 83 T2DM subjects without pre-existing cardiovascular diseases.

Background: Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) has become one of the most prevalent chronic liver diseases worldwide. The serum uric acid-to-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (UHR) has been recognized as a novel marker for metabolic diseases, including MASLD. However, all previous studies were performed in adults.
