The structure of events can influence later memory for information that is embedded in them, with evidence indicating that event boundaries can both impair and enhance memory. The current study explored whether the presence of event boundaries during encoding can structure information to improve memory. In Experiment 1, memory for a list of words was tested in which event structure was manipulated by having participants walk through a doorway, or not, halfway through the word list. In Experiment 2, memory for lists of words was tested in which event structure was manipulated using computer windows. Finally, in Experiments 3 and 4, event structure was manipulated by having event shifts described in narrative texts. The consistent finding across all of these methods and materials was that memory was better when the information was distributed across two events rather than combined into a single event. Moreover, Experiment 4 demonstrated that increasing the number of event boundaries from one to two increased the memory benefit. These results are interpreted in the context of the Event Horizon Model of event cognition.

Flux through membrane channel: linear transport single-molecule approaches.

Phys Chem Chem Phys

January 2025

Section on Molecular Transport, Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Maryland 20892, USA.

One of the most subtle steps in the single-molecule approach to the flux through the membrane channel, which uses the one-dimensional Smoluchowski equation, is to describe the molecule's "behavior" at the contacts between the channel openings and the bulk. Earlier, to handle this issue, we introduced the so-called "radiation boundary conditions" that account for the interplay between the two types of trajectories of the molecules starting at the openings, specifically, the ones that eventually return to the channel and the ones that escape to infinity. The latter trajectories represent the true translocation events on the condition that initially the molecule entered the channel from the opposite side.

Jawless vertebrates once dominated Palaeozoic waters, but just two lineages have persisted to the present day: lampreys and hagfishes. Living lampreys are a relatively small clade, with just over 50 species described, but knowledge of their evolutionary relationships has always been based on either a few mitochondrial genes or a small number of taxa. Biogeographers have noted the disjunct antitropical distribution of living lamprey families.

Purpose: In patients with relapsed or refractory (R/R) diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), brentuximab vedotin (BV) as monotherapy or combined with either lenalidomide (Len) or rituximab (R) has demonstrated efficacy with acceptable safety. We evaluated the efficacy and safety of BV + Len + R versus placebo + Len + R in patients with R/R DLBCL.

Methods: ECHELON-3 is a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, multicenter, phase 3 trial comparing BV + Len + R with placebo + Len + R in patients with R/R DLBCL.

Effects of Language Proficiency on Selective Attention Patterns at Segmenting Boundaries in English Audio Sentences.

Brain Sci

November 2024

School of Foreign Languages, Hunan University, Lushannan Road No. 2, Yuelu District, Changsha 410082, China.

Background/objectives: Normative perceptual segmentation facilitates event perception, comprehension, and memory. Given that native English listeners' normative perceptual segmentation of English speech streams coexists with a highly selective attention pattern at segmentation boundaries, it is significant to test whether Chinese learners of English have a different attention pattern at boundaries, thereby checking whether they perform a normative segmentation.

Methods: Thirty Chinese learners of English with relatively higher language proficiency (CLH) and 26 with relatively lower language proficiency (CLL) listened to a series of English audio sentences.

Soil is regarded as a natural repository for strongly adsorbed pollutants since glyphosate (GLY) is preferentially adsorbed by the inorganic fraction of the soil, which may greatly limits its leaching. In this way, understanding how clay mineralogy influences the sorption and transport processes of glyphosate in soils with different mineralogical characteristics is highly relevant. In this work, two clay mineralogy contrasting soils were used to evaluate GLY retention: a Oxisol (OX) with high levels of iron oxides (amorphous and crystalline) and a Inceptisol (IN) with a predominance of kaolinite.
