2,3-Dihydrobenzofurans are proposed as privileged structures and used as chemical platform to design small compound libraries. By combining molecular docking calculations and experimental verification of biochemical interference, we selected some potential inhibitors of microsomal prostaglandin E2 synthase (mPGES)-1. Starting from low affinity natural product 1, by our combined approach we identified the compounds 19 and 20 with biological activity in the low micromolar range. Our data suggest that the 2,3-dihydrobenzofuran derivatives might be suitable bioinspired lead compounds for development of new generation mPGES-1 inhibitors with increased affinity.

Adversity and trauma are commonly misunderstood human experiences affecting most individuals across post-secondary campuses. Depending on contextual factors, they can lead to lifelong challenges or growth. Without an adequate understanding, well-meaning individuals and organisations may unknowingly perpetuate harm.

Skin shade and relationships: how colourism pits Black and mixed Black-White women against each other.

Front Sociol

December 2024

Centre for Appearance Research, School of Social Sciences, University of the West of England, Bristol, United Kingdom.

Introduction: Colourism, prejudice where people are penalised the darker their skin and the further their features are from those associated with whiteness, occurs within and between racialised groups and can affect relationships. In this paper we examine the complex processes through which colourism positions Black and mixed Black-White women in contrasting positions in beauty and desirability hierarchies based on their skin shade.

Method: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 27 Black ( = 18) or mixed Black-White ( = 9) adults (18 women, 9 men) living in Britain.

A modular approach to catalytic stereoselective synthesis of chiral 1,2-diols and 1,3-diols.

Nat Commun

The Institute for Advanced Studies and Hongyi Honor College, Wuhan University, Wuhan, China.

Optically pure 1,2-diols and 1,3-diols are the most privileged structural motifs, widely present in natural products, pharmaceuticals and chiral auxiliaries or ligands. However, their synthesis relies on the use of toxic or expensive metal catalysts or suffer from low regioselectivity. Catalytic asymmetric synthesis of optically pure 1,n-diols from bulk chemicals in a highly stereoselective and atom-economical manner remains a formidable challenge.

Glycals as Chiral Synthons in Organic Synthesis of Privileged Molecular Scaffolds.

Chirality is a vital characteristic of molecules and crucial for biological functioning. Glycals are unsaturated chiral sugars that contain an enolic double bond within the ring structure and they introduce the chirality in the molecular scaffolds. Since their discovery and synthesis by Fischer and Zach in 1913, they have been used as a flexible chiral synthon for synthesising natural products and biologically significant molecules.

Stem cells reside in specialized microenvironments, termed niches, at several different locations in tissues. The differential functions of heterogeneous stem cells and niches are important given the increasing clinical applications of stem-cell transplantation and immunotherapy. Whether hierarchical structures among stem cells at distinct niches exist and further control aspects of immune tolerance is unknown.
