Mechanisms of charge transport between the interconnector and its neighboring layers in tandem organic photovoltaic cells have been systematically investigated by studying electronic properties of the involving interfaces with photoelectron spectroscopies and performance of the corresponding devices. The results show that charge recombination occurs at HATCN and its neighboring hole transport layers which can be deposited at low temperature. The hole transport layer plays an equal role to the interconnector itself. These insights provide guidance for the identification of new materials and the device architecture for high performance devices.

This study explores the optoelectronic and photovoltaic potential of acceptor-π-donor (A-π-D) architectures utilizing CSi quantum dots (CSiQDs) through a combination of density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TDDFT). We examined two key structural configurations: C-C and Si-C conformers. In these systems, CSiQDs serve as the acceptor, CHSF as the π-bridge, and 3 × (CHO) as the donor.

Fluorine-Free Ion-Selective Membrane with Enhanced Mg Transport for Mg-Organic Batteries.

ACS Nano

January 2025

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Texas Center for Superconductivity at the University of Houston, University of Houston, Houston, Texas 77204, United States.

Magnesium batteries offer a safer alternative for next-generation battery technology due to their insusceptibility to dendrite deposition. Selective membranes tailored for magnesium-ion conduction will unlock further technological advancement. Herein, we demonstrate fluorine-free magnesiated sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (Mg-SPEEK) selective membranes capable of facilitating magnesium-ion conduction while effectively rejecting soluble organic species.

We present a nonlinear model of thermal field emission in resonant tunneling nanostructures with multiple barriers and potential wells, based on an accurate determination of the quantum potential shape and a rigorous solution of the Schrödinger equation, while considering thermal balance. The model applies to vacuum and semiconductor resonant tunnel diode and triode structures with two and three electrodes and to the general case of two-way tunneling with electrode heating. The complete balance of heat release and transfer is accounted for, with heat transport considered ballistic.

Fast-Charging Lithium-Ion Batteries Enabled by Magnetically Aligned Electrodes.

ACS Nano

January 2025

Materials Science and Engineering Program and Walker Department of Mechanical Engineering, The University of Texas at Austin, Austin, Texas 78712, United States.

With the increasing popularity of electric transportation over the past several years, fast-charging lithium-ion batteries are highly demanded for shortening electric vehicles' charging time. Extensive efforts have been made on material development and electrode engineering; however, few of them are scalable and cost-effective enough to be potentially incorporated into the current battery production. Here, we propose a facile magnetic templating method for preparing LiFePO (LFP) cathodes with vertically aligned graphene sheets to realize fast-charging properties at a practical loading of 20 mg cm.

In the field of organic electronics and optics, there is rapidly growing interest in enhancing both charge transport and the ion transport properties of semiconductors, particularly in light of recent emerging technologies such as organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) and switchable organic nanoantennas. Herein, we propose a universal method for internalizing the ionic transport properties of conventional polymer semiconductors. The incorporation of a tetrafluorophenyl azide-based photochemical cross-linker with a tetraethylene glycol bridge into poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) significantly enhances the performance and operational stability of ion-gating devices.
