Published: February 2016

Background: To identify the relationship between predialysis pulse wave velocity (PWV), postdialysis PWV during 1 hemodialysis (HD) session, and deaths in maintenance HD patients.

Methods: 43 patients were recruited. PWV was measured before and after one HD session and dialysis- related data were recorded. Clinical data such as blood pressure, blood lipids, and blood glucose, were carefully observed and managed in a 5-year follow-up. The association between all-cause death, predialysis PWV, postdialysis PWV, change of PWV (ΔPWV), and other related variables were analyzed.

Results: After 5 years, 17 patients (39.5%) died. Univariate Cox regression analysis showed that all-cause death of the patients significantly correlated with age, postdialysis PWV, and ΔPWV. Multivariate Cox regression analysis revealed that postdialysis PWV was an independent predictor for all-cause death in these patients (HR: 1.377, 95% CI: 1.146 - 1.656, p = 0.001).

Conclusion: Elevated postdialysis PWV significantly correlated with and was an independent predictor for all-cause death in maintenance HD patients.

Background: In the intensive care unit (ICU), the incidence of iron-deficiency anemia (IDA) is relatively high and is associated with various adverse clinical outcomes. Therefore, it is crucial to identify simple and practical indicators to assess the mortality risk in ICU patients with IDA. This study aims to investigate the relationship between the Neutrophil Percentage-to-Albumin Ratio (NPAR) levels in patients with IDA in the ICU and their all-cause mortality at 30 and 365 days.

Background: Family income to poverty ratio (PIR) may have independent effects on diet and lifestyle factors and the development of prediabetes and diabetes, as well as on mortality. It is unclear how the protective effect of a healthy lifestyle against death differs between individuals with different glucose metabolic profiles and whether PIR mediates this effect. This study aimed to explore whether healthy lifestyle and family PIR reduced the risk of all-cause mortality in participants with different metabolic status and the mediating role of PIR.

Background: A scarcity of data exists concerning atrial fibrillation (AF) during the perioperative stage of non-cardiothoracic surgery, particularly orthopedic surgery. In addition, given the frequency and significant impact of AF in the perioperative period, therefore our aim was to identify prognosis and predictors of elderly hip fracture patients with perioperative AF.

Methods: An examination of hip fracture patients at the Third Hospital of Hebei Medical University, who had been hospitalized from January 2018 to October 2020 in succession, was conducted retrospectively.

The Cardiometabolic Index (CMI) is a well-recognized risk factor for a range of cardiovascular diseases and diabetes mellitus. However, the population-level characteristics of CMI and its potential association with mortality risk among individuals over 40 years of age have not been investigated. This study aims to assess the association between CMI and both all-cause and cardiovascular mortality among the middle-aged and elderly population.

Aims: Hypoalbuminemia is frequently found in patients with heart failure (HF), associated with higher morbimortality in acute HF (AHF). Moreover, Carbohydrate Antigen 125 (CA125) is elevated in most of the AHF patients. In this cohort of patients admitted for AHF, our objective was to evaluate the association between hypoalbuminemia and long-term outcomes, including mortality and HF readmissions, stratified by CA125 concentration.
